Safaa, 27

Location:
Canada

The Look:
Short dress, denim trousers (aka trouser jeans), cardigan, hijab, silver accessories.

I love it because…
of the neutral color palette. The colors work well together and for those hijabis who are afraid of wearing white scarves, this look is quite inspirational. I also love the paisley print on the dress. Very cute!

What I’d change…
I can’t tell if it’s the dress or the way she’s standing, but I might choose a dress that’s a-line shaped so that it’s looser on the bottom. Other than that, I really like this look.

What do you think of it? Leave a comment to let me know.

And by the way…
Would you wear stockings with open-toed shoes? Click here to tell me!

[UPDATE: I will continue this post later on inshallah because I am too busy to sit and write it right now. Sorry for the delay.]

Rather than continuing with my post entitled “Is Hijab Overrated Part 1?“, I am going to start addressing the questions about hijab that I receive from readers. I think these posts will be really useful, inshallah, and I think that it’s really important for me to start talking about the hijab-related information that is thrown around on the Internet. If you have any questions about hijab, please contact me.

HIJAB Q&A #1: Are Muslim women (and men) imitating the “disbelievers” by wearing “modern clothing”?

I don’t want to answer a question with a question, but let’s just think for a moment: What type of clothing do you think Prophet Muhammad wore before he became a Muslim? What do you think the Muslim females of that time wore before they were Muslims?…

Any thoughts? Please leave them below in the comments and on Monday I will continue with this post inshallah.

I came across the picture on the right online and I love the way the Muslimah is mixing textures, prints, and colors to create her unique look.

My outfit is a little less daring than hers because I was going for a more sophisticated look. I guess the idea is that it’s okay for hijabis to mix it all up sometimes. Do a textured shoe with a smooth, shiny bag. Do a hijab in a color that contrasts (but still compliments) the color of your cardigan. Etc.

Like I say, things don’t have to “match”, they just have to “go together”. I think both looks work. Do you like these eclectic hijab styles? Would you wear either of them?

This week’s Haute Hijabi is Najibah, a 22-year-old Muslimah from New Jersey. Najibah will be graduating from college this May, inshallah, and she will soon start the daunting task of job-hunting. Some people would think of her hijab as an obstacle during this time of her life, but Najibah would strongly disagree and she offers some good advice for sisters who are in a similar situation to her own.

WE LOVE HIJAB: Why do you love hijab?
NAJIBAH: I love hijab because it gives me a sense of security. When I go out in my hijab I feel good knowing that Inshallah I am pleasing Allah. Some people might think that we as Muslim women get harassed and bothered because of hijab, but in my experience I get a whole lot of respect – from Muslims and non-Muslims – because I am wearing hijab.

I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t always easy for me to abide by the Muslimah dress code. But with prayer, encouragement (wanted and unwanted) from my sisters, and personal development, I really started to love every aspect of hijab.

Hijab is so much more than a head covering. It is the way we present ourselves, how we talk, and how we act. When we wear hijab, we are representing Muslim women and we should try to show people a good example of what a Muslim woman is. We should try to remember that how we present ourselves could bring others to Islam.

WE LOVE HIJAB: How would you describe your sense of style?
NAJIBAH: Regretfully I used to wear tight jeans and shirts most of the time. But Alhamdulillah, Allah brought me out of that. Now most of the time I dress a lot more modestly and put together. I got a lot of ideas from welovehijab.com! : )

I’m a senior in college now so I thought it was time to start dressing more professionally. So you can catch me in some wide leg jeans, a short sundress, a lightweight jacket, some heels (wedges are the best for walking from class to class all day!) and a black hijab.

WE LOVE HIJAB: What is your favorite place to shop for modest clothing offline?
NAJIBAH: My favorite place to shop for modest clothing has to be Kohls. I just started shopping there and I have found the most beautiful and inexpensive spring dresses.

WE LOVE HIJAB: What types of clothing will you be wearing this spring?
NAJIBAH: For this spring, I am loving the short sundresses that you can wear as a shirt with a lightweight jacket. All you have to do is throw on some jeans underneath and a lightweight hijab for perfect spring coverage.

WE LOVE HIJAB: What clothing items do you think all Muslim women need in their wardrobes?
NAJIBAH: I think that every Muslimah needs a black hijab and a black abaya. In my opinion, a black hijab can be worn with almost anything – it’s actually my best friend, lol. And a black abaya can easily be dressed up or down depending on your accessories. You can throw one on with a denim jacket and some flats, or a blazer and heels. Either way, it’s a must have in a Muslimah’s wardrobe.

WE LOVE HIJAB: What do you think is the key to fabulous modesty?
NAJIBAH: Like a previous Haute Hijabi stated, I think the key is making sure that we are modest in actions as well as in dress. Some sisters believe that by wearing hijab, they are completely fulfilling their duty to Allah. But it is crazy to think that it is okay to wear hijab and cuss someone out or dance like you are in a music video at the same time! It kind of defeats the purpose of hijab.

WE LOVE HIJAB: What advice would you give to a sister who is worried that her hijab will hinder her ability to get a job after graduation?
NAJIBAH: I would tell her that nothing can stop her from getting whatever Allah (swt) has planned for her and it doesn’t matter what an employer has to say about it. We can’t go through life worrying about what people are going to think about us wearing hijab because we aren’t wearing it for them. We are wearing it for the sake of our souls. All we can do as Muslims is try our best to follow the commands of Allah and He will bless us with what we need, Inshallah.

Muslim women can do anything! There are hijabi professors, doctors, lawyers, and the list can go on and on. But the point is that we have to stay true to what we believe in and Inshallah, Allah will bless us with the best in this life and the next.

I love this long skirt because it’s very festive, but at the same time, it’s elegant enough to be worn to a wedding or another special event. Because the skirt is so highly embellished, I chose simple pieces to create today’s look – a breezy linen blazer, a turquoise hijab, gold bangles, and low-heeled strappy sandals. So chic, don’t you think?

While it would be easy to create a monochromatic outfit with this jacket, I think that wearing it with a colorful accessory would add an extra hint of loveliness and style. What do you think?

This week’s Haute Hijabi is Amani, a 19 year-old college student from New Jersey. Like many Muslim women, Amani’s style is an interesting mix of Islamic clothing (like abayas) and modern fashions (like maxi dresses). You may remember her from our old How To Wear Hijab video. And now you have a chance to find out more about Amani’s Haute Hijabi style!

WE LOVE HIJAB: Why do you love hijab?
AMANI: I love hijab because it allows me to always be mindful of who I am. Sometimes when you are in a situation where you may want to react in a negative way, the hijab makes you second-guess those actions and words. We know those things may be displeasing to Allah and certain things just don’t look good on a Muslim woman.

Hijab also gives me a sense of comfort; whether I’m inside or outside of my home. Although being recognized as a Muslim woman has its responsibilities, I prefer it over being recognized as anything or anyone else. When I’m out shopping or eating and I see another hijabi, she sees me, and we give Salaams and smiles… I Love It!

WE LOVE HIJAB: When did wearing hijab become like second nature to you?
AMANI: Around the age of 12 I began wearing hijab and it came naturally MashaAllah, even before my time of actually having to wear it. What wasn’t always constant was the higher level of modesty that I’m currently trying to accomplish.

WE LOVE HIJAB: What are your favorite places to shop for modest clothing?
AMANI: During spring and summer I love to shop at Old Navy because they always have a nice selection of cute maxi dresses that are great with a cardigan or maybe a cropped jacket. During the colder months it’s all about fabulous coats and sweaters, Target is the place to go to find these.

WE LOVE HIJAB: What clothing items do you think all Muslim women need in their wardrobes?
AMANI: A long-sleeved, almost knee length button down shirt in a basic color so you can wear it with almost anything. A long, lightweight, long-sleeved tunic to wear during spring and summer. A basic black abaya or jilbab, and a few colorful and printed hijabs to add some fabulousness.

WE LOVE HIJAB: Which “celebrity” really needs a Modesty Makeover and how would you dress her?
AMANI: Nicole Richie. I would dress Nicole in a white maxi dress with a tan cardigan, multi-colored pashmina hijab, and flip-flops. Oh and can’t forget the over-sized sunglasses!

WE LOVE HIJAB: What do you want non-Muslim women to know about hijab?
AMANI: That hijab-wearing Muslim women are still women and it doesn’t take some kind of super powers to wear hijab. A lot of the time when I meet non-Muslim women, at work or wherever, they say “I couldn’t wear that. You don’t want to show your hair?” Just about every woman I know enjoys getting her hair done and enjoys showing it off a little. This includes Muslim women. We just show it off in our homes instead of out in public. For the women who say, “I couldn’t wear that”… Yes you could, InshaAllah, if you truly knew of the rich benefits it brings.

WE LOVE HIJAB: What advice would you give to a sister who is having a hard time balancing Islamic modesty and her desire to be stylish?
AMANI: I would advise her to make Du’a about it. We should always try to put Allah (swt) first in our minds when it comes to dress (and everything else), before the style factor. But MashaAllah, it is definitely possible to have both Islamic modesty and style. Just visit WeLoveHijab.com for help!! :)
