A young sister from India wrote me about the fact that there are no Islamic clothing stores in her area where she can buy hijabs from. And she wanted to know if there were any hijab styles that she could create using dupattas. A dupatta is a large shawl (rectangular fabric) that typically comes as a part of a shalwar kameez suit. Usually, a dupatta is wrapped loosely around the head and/or shoulders, but in the video above, Caramelle47 shows you how to create a secure hijab style with it.

Hijab Style Tutorial By: gwhajibi


I’ve been getting some requests lately for braided hijab styles. I found this video in which the sister demonstrates how to add a braid to your hijab. At first thought, the idea of adding a braid to your hijab seems a little weird to me, but depending on what color/print your hijabs are, I think it could work.


When wearing avant garde hijab styles like this one, I would suggest keeping the color palette simple. In the video, the sister is wearing a bright yellow hijab with a green printed hijab on top. These are very contrasting hijabs, which she probably chose for demonstration purposes (so that the hijab style could be seen easily). I would choose colors that “pop” less, like a deep purple hijab with a black braided hijab on top. I’d probably stay away from prints with this style, but of course, it’s up to you. I must confess that for me, there is nothing worse than a “flat hijab“. Sounds a bit silly, I know, but seriously, I can’t stand it when my hijab is flat and tight around my head and I always try to find ways to add a little volume to my hijab styles.


I found a video in which a YouTuber named Amenakin shows us a lovely (and simple) way to wear the hijab without it being flat. She adds volume to the hijab style by adding “folds” while she’s wrapping her scarf around her head. “I have been wearing the hijab for 8 years now ever since the September 11 attacks in New York City. I saw many of my Muslim friends taking the hijab off because they were afraid of being targeted or picked on at school. I instead, chose to put the hijab on because I did not feel that the Muslim ummah should feel embarrassed for who they were. Instead, I believed that we should all stand up together and become united. As I attended my high school and got to know a few other Muslims, I started an MSA along with my sister. Through the MSA we brought together many Muslims both in the school and the community. Before the MSA, everyone had just kept to themselves, but now, we are all like a family. Every year, more people join, even non-Muslims and we help the community by volunteering at soup kitchens, mosques, and even have banquets for the high school and the community about Islam and the Middle East.


I own over 100 hijabs. The hijab is my life. I love to match my clothes all the time with my hijab, from head to toe. I even match my pins with my outfit! Because I am the only hijabi at my high school with over 2,000 people, I like to be the best dressed. I shop at stores like Forever 21, Wet Seal, Macy’s, Charlotte Russe, Necessary Clothing, and a few other small shops in New York City. I buy my hijabs when I go to Egypt or at random in stores that sell scarfs. Having hijabs’ is a little bit more easier now that non-Hijabis and Muslims wear scarves on a daily basis.


The biggest tip that I can give to anyone about the hijab is to not over think it. When I get an outfit ready, I never over think how I will match. Even when I am shopping, if I love a pair of shoes or shirt, I just buy it without giving much thought to what it would match with. Also, it’s extremely important to have your clothes organized and arranged so that when you get an outfit together, it is easy to put clothes together.”

HIJABS DU JOUR : FALL 2009 FASHION TRENDS – PLAID

In this edition of Hijabs Du Jour, I’m featuring the oft-recurring plaid trend. Plaid is popular every Fall season, but sometimes plaid clothing can be a bit much for my taste. So, I’ve found some plaid hijabs to suit any style, from playful and bold to subtle and chic.

In the collage, I featured a girly pink hijab; a bold and colorful hijab; a classic tartan style hijab; a soft pastel-toned hijab; and a subtle, tonal black hijab.

My fave out of all the hijabs above is No. 3, the classic plaid style. I think it would look nice with a simple black abaya, or with a long black skirt and classic white button up shirt. You could even wear that one with jeans…

HIJAB FASHION TRENDS : FALL 2009 – BIKER CHIC

For this edition of Hijab Fashion Trends, I am focusing on the tough side of the runways – the Biker Fashion Trend.

The biker fashion trend is all about the hard and sturdy: leather [Leather hijabs, anyone?], heavy metal, zippers and chains… anything that is the opposite of overt femininity.

Because I adore being feminine, I have created a look that is more chic than it is biker. The frilly leather blazer, pink maxi dress, studded clutch, stylish booties, and hammered gold ring all add up to a look that is hijab-friendly and biker chic.

HOW TO WEAR HIJAB STYLES : PASHMINA HIJABS

One of the readers here, Alia, wanted to know how to wear the pashmina hijab style. I was able to find a video demonstrating how to wear it. The video is by a YouTuber called Caramelle47. Check it out below and let me know what you think.

Tutorial: How To Wear a Pashmina Hijab

[Note: With this article I am trying to show that wearing hijab in and of itself will not cause hair loss. If you experience hair loss or breakage upon starting to wear hijab, there are underlying reasons (as listed below) that cause your hair loss and breakage. Please also see the comments to this post for more information and tips from other readers. And by all means, do not let this post scare you away from wearing hijab. Sometimes we might think that wearing hijab gives us an excuse to be lazy with our hair, but we have to take care of it whether the world sees it or not.]

“HIJAB IS MAKING ME BALD!”
Over the years, I have heard of Muslim women not wearing hijab because they say that wearing hijabs makes their hair fall out. If you’re experiencing this issue, there are two things that I could think of that may be causing your seemingly-hijab-induced hair loss. Read on to find out what they are and what you can do about them.

1. Your hijab is too tight.
Your scarf does not need to be locked down like a maximum security prison! A too-tight hijab can not only cause you to lose hair around the front and back of your head, but it can also cause major headaches. To resolve this issue, you could try wearing a bigger underscarf (some of those tiny ones don’t work so well with thicker heads of hair). You could also loosen your hijab and/or wear hijabs that are a bit stretchy. Your hair and head will thank you for it!

2. Your hair is too dry.
When dry hair rubs up against fabrics like the ones that you’ll find in most hijabs, the hair can break off from the friction. To resolve this issue, I have three suggestions for you…

i) Keep your hair well-moisturized by using an oil like coconut oil (olive oil and most other oils will not moisturize your hair; they will just sit on top of your hair without penetrating it). Or you could use a moisturizing conditioner like V05 Moisture Milks Moisturizing Conditioner (this is what I use on my hair and I love it!), just be sure to leave the conditioner in your hair and do not rinse it out.

ii) If your hair is long enough, be sure to keep the ends of your hair tucked in and away from the fabric of your scarf. This can be accomplished by wearing your hair in a bun, a french roll, braids, or a similar style under your scarf.

iii) Only wear smooth, silk scarves for hijabs. Hijabs made out of silk will not cause friction with your hair and thus your hair will be less likely to break and fall out.
