WE LOVE HIJAB : UPDATES

This is just to let you all know that I’m still here and to send a message to the women who are volunteering to work with me on iMuslimah.


The collage above is a sampling of some of the illustrations and photography that you’ll see in iMuslimah fashion articles, inshallah. They’re fun and I can’t wait to show them to you! :-)


For the volunteers, it has come to my attention that some of you may not have received my emails to you. Some of you are getting my emails in your spam folder and some of you are not getting them at all. To resolve this issue, I have created a Yahoo Group that I will use to communicate with iMuslimah volunteers. Whether you have heard from me or not, please join that group, inshallah.

WE LOVE HIJAB : UPDATES


Salam sisters and welcome to all of the new visitors (via AM New York [!] and such).


This site was intended to be updated very frequently every week, but as I got busier, the schedule got knocked down quite a bit.


The major project that I’ve been working on is a free online magazine for Muslim women that will feature articles on fashion (of course!), relationships, lifestyle, etc. You can check out a preview of what the site will look like at imuslimah.com…


The site will include a Q&A section that sisters can use to seek and give advice to each other, a chat room, profiles, and much more inshallah. I want the website to be more than just a magazine or a forum. It will be a place where Muslim women can interact, express themselves, get good information, and have fun.


I need your help…


Right now, imuslimah.com is a labor of love. Between doing all of the things that a lot of you out there are doing (balancing motherhood, wifehood, “muslimah-hood”, etc.), I am on the computer working on the design of and content for imuslimah.com.


As the site grows, inshallah, I will be able to hire Muslimahs to work on the site with me. I will need editors for the 4 magazine sections, writers, graphic artists for the fashion articles, moderators for other areas of the site, and Muslimahs to help promote the site on and offline.


To restate, right now the site is a labor of love for me. I am not getting paid to create it and I won’t be getting paid to maintain it unless and until advertisers come along. I am looking for some dedicated sisters to jump in with me and volunteer their time and talents to help me get this project rolling. There are a lot of Muslimahs out there who want/need a site like this and from the responses to a previous poll that I did here, I know that many of you are looking for something like this as well.


So, if you are looking for a way to do what you love to do (be it writing, drawing, marketing, etc.), please consider helping me out with imuslimah.com. I am doing this in service to Allah and inshallah, we can do great things and benefit a world of Muslim women through our efforts.

ISLAMIC CLOTHING FINDS


This subtle purple-striped drawstring-waist dress by Gap is today’s Adore Du Jour. What makes this dress a great Islamic clothing find is that it’s affordable, long, and loose.

To style it, I chose a lightweight wrap to provide arm coverage, dark trouser jeans (a better option for summer than heavy jeans), coordinating accessories in black and red, and a multicolored summer hijab to tie all of the colors together.

HOT HIJAB STYLE


While most of us won’t be shopping for bikinis (at least not to wear to the beach anyway), we can still head to the swimsuit section for other reasons – swimsuit coverups. When it comes to summer hijab fashion, swimsuit coverups can be a hijabi’s best friend. Many of them come in the form of long-sleeved tunics that Muslim women can wear comfortably all summer long.


The tunics pictured above are my favorite style so far. They are very long, very lightweight, and the elastic under the bust-line on these tops gives them a subtle a-line shape that dresses them up just a bit.

HAUTE HIJABI : SALIMAH


This week’s Haute Hijabi is Salimah, a 23-year-old Muslimah from New Jersey. Salimah is a Muslimah diva when it comes to fashion. HIJAB FASHION DON’T : SLINKY KNITS


The wrap-dress pictured above has great length (for a top), pretty blouson sleeves, and cute ruffle detailing. But, it also has one major problem. The fabric.


The fabric on this dress is a slinky, jersey knit and in recent seasons, we’ve seen a lot of styles done in the same fabric. The problem with jersey is that it falls on your body in a way that reveals every curve that you have. Since the purpose of hijab is to conceal your curves, jersey clothing can pose a problem for Muslim women, but you don’t have to completely avoid it.

ISLAMIC CLOTHING FINDS


Today’s Adore Du Jour is this lovely maxi dress by B.B. Dakota ($56). There are a few things that make this dress such a great Islamic clothing find. For one thing, the dress is made of a woven cotton fabric, which is more modest then the jersey-knit fabric that many maxi dresses are made of. Secondly, the fit of the dress is very full from the waistline to the hemline, which is great for covering up our curves. And lastly, the print on the dress is a multi-colored floral pattern that can be paired with a variety of hijab and jacket colors. You can wear this dress over and over again this summer without repeating the same exact look twice!


For the “Wear it with…” portion of the collage, we gave you 3 different jacket options at 3 different price levels. We chose a neutral jacket to match the solid hemline of the dress and included three different hijab options that can work with that outfit. Which jacket and hijab would you choose?

HIJAB BOUTIQUES


There is a brand new Islamic clothing store online called Taqwa Iman. The clothing line was designed by Taqwa Aquil who wants to provide Muslim women with modest clothing that is “chic, economical, and Islamic.”


The pretty damask-printed skirts above are our favorite pieces at Taqwa Iman. You can style them easily by pairing them with solid color tops as shown. HOT HIJAB STYLE


We’ve been getting a lot of emails lately from Muslim women who want to know how to layer comfortably when it’s hot outside. Soon it will be summertime and we’ll all be dealing with those dreaded 90°+ temperatures; and that hot weather can definitely be a problem for sisters who wear hijab.


It’s easy to feel isolated in our layering dilemma, but we’re not the only ones who have this issue. If you think about it, businessmen and women wear at least 3 layers of clothing all year long. They typically have on a blazer, a button-front shirt, and pants or a skirt. Not to mention boxers and undershirts for men; and bras, panties, slips, and stockings for women.


The good thing for us, though, is that we don’t have to wear thick business suits (unless of course your job requires them). Instead we can follow a few simple tips to ensure that our summer hijab style will be more haute than it is hot!
