MODERN ISLAMIC CLOTHING DESIGNER : SAOULI
I love, love, LOVE Saouli! In case you haven’t heard, Saouli is a growing European fashion brand complete with boutiques, runway shows, and an awe-inspiring line of modern Islamic clothing. I first fell in love with Saouli about back in 2007 when I found out about their US fashion debut in Chicago. Since then, I have been periodically checking their website for updates and finding nothing but a blank page. Well today I realized that I was checking the wrong URL!
Now that I have the correct web address, I am once again able to drool over the pretty hijab-friendly fashions that the Muslimahs of Saouli deliver. — Astuce, the striped tunic with pleats and flared sleeves. Loana, the Aztec-esque printed yellow dress top. Sandra, the graphic purple and black printed top. Laetitia, the sophisticated plaid dress top. — All of these tops are priced at around $40 (less shipping and handling – which could be expensive).
While I work up the nerve to ignore the horror stories about ordering clothing from overseas, tell me, do you love the Saouli line as much as I do?

Sorry, should have mentioned good post! Waiting on the next one!
As salaamu alaykum,
I am so feeling those outfits; they are gorgeous, masha’Allah! Especially that Aztec-esque printed yellow dress top! I wouldn’t mind having that piece in my wardrobe right about now, insha’Allah! Saouli seems to have hit the nail on the head with good fashion!
@ Khalida—> Thanks for reminding me about Just Long Shirts! I cheked out that site once before and they really do have some pretty awesome tops, masha’Allah!
O Prophet! Tell your wives and your doughters and the women of the belivers to draw their cloaks(veils) all over the bodies(i.e. screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving,Most Merciful.
The Prophet (SAWS) said, “There are two kinds of the dwellers in Hell I have never seen yet. Those of the first group have whips similar to cows’ tails, they beat people therewith; and those (of the other group) are women: (who are) seemingly dressed yet, in fact, they are undressed, deviated, and persuade others (i.e. other women) to stray, their heads are similar to (the similitude of) the humps of leaning camels. Verily, they will never enter Paradise nor smell its scent, (though) they will find its redolent scent far away from them as the journey that spans for such-and-such.”
Authentic hadith reported by Muslim in Al-Musnad Al-Sahih page/number 2128 and narrated by Abu Huraira
Assalaamualaikum Sis. Ruqayyah,
It does not say in the Qur’aan (in Arabic) to “screen themselves completely except the eyes or one eye to see they way”. The translation that you provide clearly adds words to the original Arabic.
“bi-khumurihinna ‘alaa juyuubihinn”
Now where is the word eye or eyes in this instruction from Allah subhana wa ta ala?
What is the khimar?
Here are some definitions of the khimar and what it means in classical Arabic:
Imam Abu’l-Fida ibn Kathir:
“Khumur is the plural of khimar which means something that covers, and is what is used to cover the head. This is what is known among the people as a khimar.”
The dictionary of classical Arabic, Aqrab al-Mawarid:
“[The word khimar refers to] all such pieces of cloth which are used to cover the head. It is a piece of cloth which is used by a woman to cover her head.”
Shaykh Muhammad al-Munajjid on Islam Q&A:
“Khimaar comes from the word khamr, the root meaning of which is to cover. For example, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Khammiru aaniyatakum (cover your vessels).” Everything that covers something else is called its khimaar. But in common usage khimaar has come to be used as a name for the garment with which a woman covers her head; in some cases this does not go against the linguistic meaning of khimaar. Some of the fuqahaa’ have defined it as that which covers the head, the temples and the neck. The difference between the hijaab and the khimaar is that the hijaab is something which covers all of a woman’s body, whilst the khimaar in general is something with which a woman covers her head.”
Shaykh Muhammad Nasiruddin Albani:
“The word khimaar linguistically means only a head covering. Whenever it is mentioned in general terms, this is what is intended.”
What is the woman’s jayb?
The usual translation of the term is “bosom”. The word “jayb” has also given its name to a certain type of mathematical curve (see The Origin of the Word Sine).
As well, Surah al-Qasas ayah 32 in Arabic reads “Usluk yadaka fii JAYB ka takhrur bayda’a…” which means “Thrust your hand into your chest and it will come out white…” (this is a story about the prophet Musa, alayhi salam).
Shaykh Muhammad Nasiruddin Albani says that the word “jayb” is related to the word “jawb” which refers to something cut out, and he says that in this context it refers to the neckline of the woman’s dress.
In any case, all of these definitions clearly point to the bosom, the upper chest, or the neck and upper chest. They certainly do not mean “face” or “entire body”!
(From Islam for Today website)
From Surah Al-Azhab-
wa Nisaaa-ill Mu’miina yudniina ‘alay-hinna min jalaabiibihin zaalika adnaa ‘any yu’rafna fa-laa yu’zayn. Wa kaanallaahu Gafuurar-Rahiimaa.
There is no mention of the word eye or eyes.
Salam – what a great site! I am in love with those clothes – please please keep us posted how the overseas buying goes… and how much shipping etc…
jazak Allah al khayr!
Ruqayyah – Anything that is written between parenthesis in the Qur’an IS NOT A PART OF ALLAH’S WORDS. I hate that people include parenthetical statements in their translations of The Qur’an because it confuses people and leads them astray.
May Allah guide us aright. There are simply too many arguments in Islam and thats why we are split into sects. The Quran is written in a plain simple language with proper translations available. As such, I never cease to wonder ‘Why on earth do we differ?’
As salaamu alaikum , I ‘m feelin the Saouli line but what’s up with the link? I believe this one may be outdated as well because there was no catalog available. Inshallah can anyone help me out? Shukran Uhkti :)
