hijabstylesHIJAB STYLE STEAL: ECLECTIC CHIC

I came across the picture on the right online and I love the way the Muslimah is mixing textures, prints, and colors to create her unique look.

My outfit is a little less daring than hers because I was going for a more sophisticated look. I guess the idea is that it’s okay for hijabis to mix it all up sometimes. Do a textured shoe with a smooth, shiny bag. Do a hijab in a color that contrasts (but still compliments) the color of your cardigan. Etc.

Like I say, things don’t have to “match”, they just have to “go together”. I think both looks work. Do you like these eclectic hijab styles? Would you wear either of them?

Salaam,

I’m a fan of fashion creativity and not always sticking to matchy-match (although nothing wrong with that, matching can look really nice).

I like to mix it up with accessories, like pairing red heels with a sage green and black outfit, or even something dramatic like an all-black outfit with a turquoise hijab and dark red shoes and bag (I love my red shoes!) I do like to separate non-matching pieces with a neutral color though.

That sister is brave with her eclectic outfit, but she pulls it off because she looks confident and happy in it.

I LOVE THIS!

It doesn’t seem like it should work, but it so does.

I want to say i like it but i cant because i can see the sisters shape and her neck. she is coverd but the clothes are tight fitting and the scarf is revealing. i havent been muslim very long but i was extremely confused when i went out and saw how some people dress when i first took shahadda. i am not judging but i think it can confuse people like it did me as to how we can dress properly in our own style while still pleasing Allah.

i think the pic above was meant to be an example of mixing different patterns and colours. I don’t think the writer is advocating the particular style of wearing the scarf around her head.
It’s up to the reader to follow the picture closely, or just use it as an inspiration for mixing colours and still dress they way they prefer: such as wearing the above outfit without a scarf on their head, or with a stripe abaya/ jilbab instead, or any other combination.
God gives people different challenges , and what is easy to some, may be really hard to others. In the big scheme of life, of our jorney in this dunya, in the middle of all the important things we can do to please God and all the many things mentioned in the Quran, is an inch of skin showing, or a empire waist dress enough to discredit a believer’s efforts to please Allah?
Just a comment…

I would totally wear it! I used to dress even crazier, but I guess maturity had me toned it down a notch ;)

But I am so loooving this look!

I also posted about this sister style a week ago … I definitely love her style :)

I dont think the writer is advocating anything either, i do see the exapmle of mixing colors i just get frustrated by the examples because there are more with tight fitting clothes then there are any other. i am not discrediting the sister in the picture at all, as i said i was not judging her, she may very well be mich better than me in many things.

regarding women wearing trousers…. I’m sorry but I think people go too far with some of these definitions. If trousers show “the shape of the women’s leg”..then an abaya’ jilbab with sleeves will show the shape of her arms?
OR: “He also said: What I think is that it is haraam for women to wear pants, because they are an imitation of men. ” Then..wouldnt abayas be imitating Middle eastern men’s outfit, such as the long thobe? Or in Pakistan, where men and women wear a long shirt with pants underneath? Or in south India, where man’s traditional outfit is the ‘wrap around’, like a skirt?
OR: “A woman should only wear women’s clothes, the dress of her own country; she should not deviate from that. ” What if you are originally American or any other country, whose standard dress are trousers for women? What if you are from South Asia and your original outfit is the shalwar kameez, which comes with trousers , which shows you have two legs?
I am sorry, I don’t mean to contest everything..however, I do believe we spend WAAAY too much time dwelling over these issues. Wear loose clothes, ACT modestly, and let’s spend time and effort restoring women’s status and family matters to how it used to be at the time of the prophet, pbuh.

Basically some sisters wear trousers with long shirts or dresses, some wear business suits and other sisters wear only abaya or jilbab. There is a difference of opinion on this so I think it is best to do come to your own decision with the understanding that some sisters may have an understanding that is different than yours. They are not stupid or uneducated they just have chosen to use the God-given flexibility granted them as far as what items can be used to cover the body.

The picture you have displayed has a woman with a very tight dress that is designed to accentuates a woman’s chest. Her neck and hair is showing. This goes against Islamic rule of Hijab. I totally agree with Sera. Further, you should take this picture off your website called “we love hijab” it’s misleading to sisters that don’t know about the rules of hijab. I mean this with respect but you should be more careful sister.

God bless you sister and to all.

Revert of many years

Assalamu alaykum:

I love hijab fashion blogs. I don’t always care for the combinations, sometimes I think the items shown are so expensive as to be haraam (we can better spend our money elsewhere), some are ridiculous (high wedge crystal heels, really now, where should I wear that? To work or the mosque?). HOWEVER, I always appreciate the effort these sisters put into their blogs, into offering color combos that go beyond black with black. We are each accountable for our own selves. If you have some questions about hijab, READ, READ, READ, and then ASK, ASK, ASK your local scholar/imam/imam’s wife.

We should always encourage the good and forbid the bad, but a curious thing I’ve noticed with that with the rise in these types of blogs is the rise in backbiting and ‘flaming of blogging sisters. I couldn’t be more appalled. Get your deen on, treat each other with compassion and kindness. If you have corrections to make, make them gently and with the daleel (proof) to back them up.

Sister, your blog was the first hijabi blog I came across. Keep it up, I’m glad to see some new postings. May Allah (swt) correct our actions, keep us on the straight path and from creating fitnah amongst ourselves. Insha Allah wa ameen.

Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi,

Nobody answered your question, lol.
As for the white cardigan, GAP has a lot of cardigans now (http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=8993&pid=594923) . I know come people don’t shop there because of their alleged zionist links, so maybe try victoria secret.com (although it may cost more than $40, or target.com. Im pretty sure Targer would have them.
Amazon.com: http://tinyurl.com/cardigan1 and http://tinyurl.com/cardigan2
You just have to look for it!
I also try not to match too much (i think it looks cheezy ), however, it’s been a hard habit to break.
hope this helps

I AGREE..And as far as wearing a scarf to cover- in Middle Eastern countries you see some women with some of their hair showing in the front. What is your opinions regarding that??

Re: the women in the middle east, with a bit of hair showing in the front? I don’t know.. I think we see that mostly in countries where they are forced to wear a head covering, so they put a scarf on by obligation..and leave the hair showingin the front to look more attractive?

This is terrible – how can this be seen as muslim-wear? It not only shows the girls shape and skin, but makes her stand out very much. Women are not supposed to bring attention to themselves in Islam. I am 17, and even I disapprove of this younger generation’s dress.

It’s “terrible”?? You would think that I posted a picture of a streetwalker or something! Please, everyone who is talking about how awful the sister in this post is dressed, where is your proof from the Qur’an? Seriously… I’m waiting to see it. :-)

I am wondering if, when you decided to start a blog about hijab, you imagined it would be this ‘controversial’? :))))
I bet you were just trying to do some good for all muslims sisters, huh? I think you are doing a great job!
I don’t agree with all of the outfits posted here, just because of difference in taste or fashion principles….nothing personal!
I just wanted to tell you to keep up the great job, I can tell you are working hard and I hope you continue doing this, despite of all the criticism you get from people who don’t agree with your views.

That fact that we as Muslims spend most of our time beating up on another sister because of her clothing is really what is “terrible!”

I think the sister is cute and fly. Notice the outfit that Kima put together is INSPIRED BY the colors and particular pieces that the girl in the picture has used. You have a “choice” to wear it as loose as you want or to make sure that your neck is covered in the way that you want.

Man oh man! We are our worst enemies. Do some of you have any idea how hard it can be to be wearing hijab in this society and you want to trash someone? My dear sweet sisters in Islam when will this stop?

I like the way you mix the color together, as for myself I’m not wearing mixing like this mostly I wearing the same tone but maybe I’ll try to mix it too just to have fun and change my look.

It just style steal so it depends on you to apply it to yourself as long as you know what you’re wearing and know what islam teach you. “Not too fit, not too tight” that’s it.

Just a word of warning, you do realise that you’ve taken a fully copyrighted photo and placed it on your website? Make sure you ask the photographer first before using their photos (If you have asked, then there is no problem, except for the fact that the woman in the photo wasn’t asked!). I really do appreciate your work on this website, and I know you didn’t set out to attack her, but she’s obviously been put in that position anyway, by others. Next time it might be a good idea to ask first.. or check the copyright conditions of the photos.

@Teahead and Another Sister: I don’t know much about copyright law but from what I understand I can use a picture as long as I link back to the original photo, which I did in the very first sentence. If the person holding the copyright wants to request that I take it down, he/she can easily contact me by email and I will have no problem removing the picture. Thank you for your concern.

Another Sister

I agree with teahead. you could get into alot of trouble for a using a copyrighted photo. The other thing is, all these people who are so intent on judging the way this girl is dressed should focus on fixing their own behaviour, attitudes and perceptions of what a ‘good’ muslimah is and try to be better role models. being a good muslim woman isn’t all about what you wear, to the contrary thats very superficial. Stop the back biting and putting people down. Her hijab is between her and Allah (Subhanuh w taa’la) it is seriously none of anybodys business.

I do not agree with the high heels. A flat ballet flat. Converse sneaker, or gladiator sandals all add definition to this look with no,
“clickity clack all the way to the barber shop” type of heel.

wow, this is quite entertaining for me! Although I think you’re all nuts. I did log on and think that this outfit was a bit risque for a “modest muslim woman”. It is a low cut, sexy dress – just because you put a stupid scarf on your head doesn’t make it OK

Reply

Khalisa

Man oh man, some of the comments here…. *smh*. “Stupid scarf”? Last I checked it’s called HIJAB and this website is called ‘WE LOVE HIJAB’ for a reason. I don’t understand why people come online and get so brave with their judgmental ranting. If you have a problem with the ‘stupid scarf’, no one’s forcing you to view the site. If you don’t like what this woman’s wearing, if you don’t like Kima’s suggestions, or if you have a problem with what Muslim women wear on their heads, use your mouse arrow and click on outta here, don’t let the proverbial door hit you!

Hello,
I am in the process from being a Catholic all of my life to entering Islam. I have decided to not cover my head because I am not used to it at all and don’t know if I could handle it but I I am Muslim (I don’t want to disrespect anyone). Do you think it is o.k. to wear a dress like the one on the picture above without the long sleeve shirt underneath? I can take any feedback you may want to give.

Reply

JG

Another thing. I absolutely LOVE the entire outfit. It is definitely my style of wear.

Reply

aagi

sure it’s ok to wear it without something long-sleeved underneath… if you wear something long-sleeved over it ;) in islam you shouldn’t show your body.
i did see a lot of muslims with uncovered forearms (in really hot countries) but all of them had covered shoulders.
i myself sometimes still wear 3/4 or 7/8 sleeve just because i have a lot of clothes like that and i really like them, so i’m slowly changing into full sleeve but i think ill just wear some fake sleeves underneath some of them and it would be ok.
if you don’t wear the hijab yet, how would you cover the cleavage in this dress without some shirt underneath or over it?
i know we all have different opinions about what is still ok and what is not, but i think we all would agree that a muslima should definitely NOT show her cleavage.

Reply

anythingbutordinary

@ aagi: you could wear a higher cut (crew neck or turtleneck) long sleeved t shirt UNDER it. I love the layered look!! (:

Reply

aagi

obviously you could. my comment was an answer to a question by JG. a bit sarcastic of me i suppose;)
of course you could wear something under it but she was asking if it’s ok not to wear a long-sleeved shirt under it so i thought of something over it. basically it was suppose to mean that you should not wear it without anything over or under it since it is sleeveless and with low cleavage.

This is cute! I really like it. I prefer the clothes Kima suggested to the ones in the actual picture. However, I would wear my scarf in a way that it covers as much of my chest as possible, because I have a bigger chest than the lady in the picture, and an empire waist dress makes it look even bigger. Lol.

Reply

Amalia Mae

Oh yeahh, and I would tighten my scarf so it covers my neck, not because I’m extremely picky but because I think it looks more sophisticated if I do so.

Reply

Lubna

Even if you do not wear the hijab, you must dress decently as possble. That means no sleeveless or shortsleeves and not low cleavage. But if you have converted to islam, the hijab is very important to fully fulfilling the rules of islam. I understand that it is hard to wear the hijab when you have spent all your life without it. You feel as if everyone is looking at you and it will feel that way inthe beginning, but you will feel normal soon(I promise). I would like to know where I cansubmit some styles I myself wear clothing wise. As for the Lela who posted stupid scarf, that is disrespectful and an uneducated comment. You are entitled to your opinion, but say it with respect.

Nah, I don’t really like the girl in the photo’s look that much. Our hostess :) has put up a cardigan instead of a tight long sleeved shirt to wear over the low-cut dress, and I really appreciate that. I prefer not to wear dresses like what the girl is wearing because I think that even if you’re wearing a long sleeve with it:
a)the cut of the shirt emphasizes the chest (which I like to avoid)
b)I think it’s a real fashion no-no as well.

Hello,sisters
I just want to let you guys know in Islam there”s aurah and that means everything except face and hands(wrists and palm- fingers)must be covered no exception. Looking at the outfit:Pants are haram and heels reveal the feet which is part of aurah. You can also see her neck. The outfit draws attention which is haram.I just want you to give Muslim sisters proper advice that wont make them receive sin. Although I must admit that it is very appealing and pretty for a non-Muslim.

Outfit:A long dress,long-sleeve under and uggs.

Reply

Muslima

Dear Yasmin,

It is pointed out that the girl isn’t properly covered, and Sister Kima’s outfit is much more covering. You have no evidence that pants are haram, they are not as long as they are loose and hide the shape of the leg. Plenty of Muslims, by the way, believe that the feet are not part of the awrah and are all right to be seen. There is also no ayah saying ‘drawing attention is haram’. Muslim women naturally draw attention to themselves because of our different way of dressing. Please do not make haram what Allah has made halal, sister.

Reply

Alia

I think its important to remember that modesty is not only by dress. A woman who covers herself fully even the face does not make her any more modest in character than a woman who has natural modesty and less covered.

As a muslimah, judging this woman for being ‘risqué’ in this photograph is silly because as we all know, it’s all about what is ‘within’ and modesty by character is far more important. Some women haven’t even plucked up the courage to cover their hair because of social pressures so this photograph my inspire some to experiment.

We are all sisters. Why such negativity??
