HIJAB FASHION DON’T : SLINKY KNITS

The wrap-dress pictured above has great length (for a top), pretty blouson sleeves, and cute ruffle detailing. But, it also has one major problem. The fabric.

The fabric on this dress is a slinky, jersey knit and in recent seasons, we’ve seen a lot of styles done in the same fabric. The problem with jersey is that it falls on your body in a way that reveals every curve that you have. Since the purpose of hijab is to conceal your curves, jersey clothing can pose a problem for Muslim women, but you don’t have to completely avoid it.

HOW TO WEAR SLINKY, KNIT FABRICS

1. Size-Up. For hijab-wearing women, buying clothes that are one or two sizes too big is a typical thing. But when it comes to slinky knits, you might have to size up even more. If you look at the back of the wrap-dress, you can see how the fabric is stretching across the model’s bottom half. Buying the dress in 2 or 3 sizes bigger would allow the fabric to drape over the model’s curves like a full curtain, which would be much more modest.

2. Clothes that are made out of fabrics like jersey are always tight on the bust (no matter what size you buy). So, you’ll want to make sure that your scarf is big enough to drape over your chest for good coverage.

3. Never wear a jersey top with a jersey bottom. Two knitted fabrics would cling to each other, so you’ll want to wear a jersey piece with something more structured. For example, if you’re wearing a jersey dress like the one featured above, pair it with wide-leg jeans or twill pants. Those fabrics will allow the dress to “flow” over your hips and thighs, giving you a look that is very modest and very chic.

I love the sleeves on the dress. Size up!! You can’t go wrong.

AsianPranksta 05.19.08 at 5:00 pm

bahijah 05.19.08 at 5:08 pm

MashAllah! I love your site and look forward to your daily emails, this is very true about this material. I’m a new muslima in Texas and I look to your site for tips on my clothing very much.

Angela 05.19.08 at 7:44 pm

Yikes! Is that back view (bagging where she’s narrow and pulling where she’s wide) supposed to be a fashion do for anyone?

badhijabday 05.19.08 at 9:25 pm

lol angela! it does look pretty bad! hehe

Maryam 05.19.08 at 10:07 pm

Hum, I agrea with the recommendation, though this particular dress seems harder to make in hijab. I looked in their website and they actually have many dresses that could be suitable, added with one on these recommendations. Thank you for your magazine, is is very interesting!

Miss Rayan 05.20.08 at 2:32 pm

Ohh! I love that dress! :-)

Leslie 05.20.08 at 6:54 pm

I love this dress but thanks for the awesome suggestion!! I just bought a gorgeous floor length dress from Forever 21 that is flowy and loose–perfect for Muslimas—- but the only problem is I need to find a cardigan to cover my top (it is halter top) any suggestions where I can find a dressy cardigan for full coverage??????????

Hijab-ed 05.20.08 at 6:57 pm

Another suggestion, in addition to buying a size or two bigger than usual is to wear a satin(y) dress slip underneath. That will keep the dress from clinging to your curves, instead it’ll ’slip’ over the slip.

kat 05.21.08 at 2:30 am

aawrwb
it should be fine if you don’t have curves (like myself)

Renee 05.21.08 at 1:26 pm

I would love this as a cardigan, unbelted for the ruffle. I like the ruffle. Thanks for the tips.

sara 05.22.08 at 9:11 am

Wide leg pants and dresses don’t work for me, it makes me look short. I think dark bootcut pants with dresses work better for petite women.

A'ISHA 05.22.08 at 10:14 am

sara you should check out the haute hijabi, she’s petite (looking) and the pants and dress look nice on her mashallah. I’m petite too but i’m gonna try it now!

This is one of those things that so many of us, though well intentioned, fail to notice. We find these wonderful, cute wrap tops like this and rejoice that it’s long sleeved and A-line, so we think, “Trendy and modest!” However, a lot of times we don’t think about the material. Jazaks for posting this; great reminder!

Noor 06.11.08 at 6:23 am

Yeap i totally agree, jersey material is a no-no unless u size it up…
Now i’m thinking how cute the outfit will be in satin or silk..wow!

Isabelle Yasmina 06.16.08 at 6:31 pm

I found actualy one dress like this similar but had a square neckline,I bought it almost 2 size biger then usual and fits loose and so pretty, I would have never bought it usualy because the material clinges to much and reveals the curves!! I paired it with black flair pants to match realy looks nice

libiya 06.20.08 at 2:55 pm

Definitely a hijab dont….but sooo cute, the ruffles an bow tie really love da sleeves.id get 1 or 2 sizs biger an were a cute pair of light dimed jeans, silver flats and silver purse to match an any color hijab. also long beaded necklaces go perfect.
if this top still clings then where a those silk skirts that you usually where under a skirt and where jeans thats a must!!! and where a biger hijab to cover your chest.
Thanks WELOVEHIJAB

Ok, that really helps.
Since I have been coming to this website, mashallah, I have been thinking about re doing my wardrobe.
Mashallah i am a new hijabe. I started around febuary :)
I feel more secure. THANKS, AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

TEM 06.29.08 at 9:04 pm

I agree with the comments of the dress, but I really love jersey for skirts…especially when they are stretchy.

Dee 07.03.08 at 5:48 am

I wear those type of dresses with tailored pants, and I make sure to wear them 2 sizes bigger. It looks pretty and modest. The tailored pants tame the curves and so does the up sizing of the dress. However, if you feel like you’re slacking on your modesty you can add a blazer or cardigan, inshallah.

Rodnesha 07.04.08 at 10:13 pm

farida 09.11.08 at 7:14 pm

assalamualaikum. i have a problem. im a bit chubby and have a boosem on the larger side of life so when i wear tunic dresses they tend to highlight my boosem. what other alternatives are ther 4 me. its not only tunics, most tops. the thing is ,im in stay in Botswana which is in southern africa and its soooo hot so wearing too many layers to try and hide the boosem can be a problem. i discovered wearing sarongs and big scarfs as my hijab and it looks realy wow! most importantly….hides the boosem cos it looks like a burkah. but what other thins can i try.

leylah 12.21.08 at 5:32 pm

i agree with angela way up there, but i get the point: jersey fabrics are usually too slinky for a hijabi. however most of the shayla hijabs me and my mom own are long enough to cover, and im not as curvy as the girl in the picture so im ok w/wearing dresses like that :)

samiyah 02.14.09 at 8:53 pm

to farida:
you could wear a long headscarf that covers you front

OmAdam 03.15.09 at 5:44 pm

:)

Hafsa 03.16.09 at 12:58 am

For Farida:

You could try wearing an extra layer in a really fine cotton like gauze or lawn. That way it would not trap extra heat but it could give you enough extra bulk/puffiness to minimize your figure.

And same thing with your headscarves. Wearing a lighter cotton shayla over a regular hijab and lettting it cover your bosom is an option.

Hmm, other things, going for trapezoid shapes and yoke dresses, dresses and tunics with gathers above the bust.

Using color or patterns or accessories to draw the attention elsewhere. Like wearing dark colored tops and bright skirts or shoes.

Khalidah 04.07.09 at 1:59 pm

Nice. I’m wearing something like that right now, but I have some baggy pants and a big coat over. I only wear this dress when is cold so I can put a coat or long sweater over.

sh 08.08.09 at 5:54 pm

you’re right they really do hug the body. Too bad because they are long sleeved!

Yurrah 08.11.09 at 5:31 pm

loool i love this website

LabellaIman 08.22.09 at 10:33 pm

As salaamualaikum!

Loveee these posts, i have a suggestion to kill it all. ABAYA!! woohoo. well not just abaya, but u know jilbabs, caftans overgarmentsi n general. or long flowy skirts with long dresses as well. i think we all fall into the thought that wearing loose jeans or pants and a duster is hijab when in fact its not. its great for new muslims or muslims who are just now starting to cover but after awhile we must must must go to the text! (quran and sunnah) :D love this site ladies good job!

Salaamaualikum

Cheeky101 02.11.10 at 8:26 am

Are muslim women allowed to wear trousers or leggings underneath dresses in cold weather?? I suppose you cant see that the leggings hug curves if it is covered by a dress so im just wondering ( doing a school project ) what goes on! Love your site, has helped a lot!!
Thanks,
x:)

Dani 10.27.10 at 1:50 am

I love my fiance who is a Muslim man and I love Islam, but I do not want to wear hijab . No disrespect, I respect and love women who choose to wear the hijab. I just feel it is a choice and I choose not to. If I choose to convert to Islam because I do believe am I not a true Muslim if I don’t wear hijab?
