HIJAB STYLE REMIX : JULIANNE MOORE

When we found this picture of Julianne Moore online, we immediately fell in love with the pretty fuchsia color of her dress. To the average girl, her look is probably conservative because the dress is knee-length and it has long sleeves. But for Muslim women, of course, Julianne’s outfit needs a few extra pieces in order to make it modest enough for us to wear.

The key to recreating the look was to find a dress that had a similar bright color. We chose black and white pieces to complete the outfit because the dress is supposed to be the main focal point. However, you could always add some metallic accessories or a colorful hijab to give the ensemble a little more flavor!

It looks like the dress is sheer on the sleeves a bit. You could wear a tee with it though. Good article mashallah!

awesome outfit!! i looooove that color, and that top is gorgeous…although it DOES look a little on the sheer side. and it’s expensive, but still….good ideas =)

Thanks ladies! :-)

About the top, you definitely would want to wear it over something that has long sleeves because it is a bit sheer. It comes with a slip though, so you could probably add a thin t-shirt to provide the extra amount of coverage that we need.

Assalamualaikum.

I am Ashna from the Philippines. I used to wear headscarf back in college; I removed when I started to work (bad, me). Maybe Allah has reason why I accidentally got stumbled in this website. Now, I have strength to wear hijab again. Shukran sisters.

My fuchsia dress is now on the way thanks to you ladies! This is the best site ever! :) —– Lisa G.

Fuchsia may not look good on me because of I’m warm coloring. It’ll be more helpful if there is fashion suggestion for warm and cool coloring. Eg, Not all people can wear the same purple color. Orchid purple color looks good on warm skin but not for cool skin. The latter might be flattered with indigo.

The prophet peace be upon him said that “who ever trys to look like a certain people, then he is one of them.” Muslims should should try to be like the prophets wives who are true rolemodels for us in the quran and sunna not some kafir celebrity. I urge myself as well as my fellow muslim sisters to wear the hijab proudly. But it also means that we don’t have to turn it into an artwork. If you’re going out in tight flashy clothes, and something on top of your had, know my dear sister in islam that that is NOT HIJAB that Allah the almighty wants for us to wear. The whole point is to draw attention away from you not to you.

obligations of the hijab include
1.It doesn’t look like mens clothing
2.It doesnt show the figure of the body,no flashy stuff
3.It doesn’t look like non muslim clothing

Salam 10.16.08 at 10:22 am

The prophet peace and blessings be upon him said “who ever tries to look like a certain people, then he is one of them” So you make the decision, you want to look like Juliane Moore or Aisha, the prophet’s wife.

Yasmin 10.25.08 at 12:00 pm

I agree with Salam here. I am sadden that for Muslimahs, hijab has become a fashion statement and wearing high heels shoes that attract attention when they walk by making loud noise.

I truly doubt looking fashionable would get me into heaven anytime soon. Besides, I rather look beautiful for my husband in the privacy of my own home and look plain to the whole world.

Issra 11.11.08 at 3:35 am

Vey Nice, Very Expensive!

leylah 12.23.08 at 10:10 pm

salam and yasmin, just because we’re muslim hijabis doesnt mean we cant have fun. you guys can look as plain and ugly as you want, but keep that to yourselves and if you dislike that idea, dont go on this site.

also, isn’t it enough that we have to cover everything but our hands and faces (not that i disagree w/that)? isn’t it only fair that we beautify what we can?
puh-leeeeeeease.

AND WHAT IF WE DON’T HAVE HUSBANDS???!!! i’m 16 and a hijabi, so i have no excuse to be an ugly hijabi, thank you very much.

..i dont mean to be rude. thats just what i think.

DREA 12.24.08 at 8:14 pm

we are in america. please believe that most men are not looking at a woman who is covered before they look at a woman who has on revealing clothes. this sight is perfect for women who want to please allah and have style. we were not raised in saudi arabia or egypt. so as long as there is no cleavage, butt sticking out, this is a wonderful attempt to please allah and our husbands.

may we all continue to study and uplift one another.

allah judges us by our intentions. this site in no way takes away from the desire of a muslimah to please allah.

i agree with leylah and drea. think rationally you guys: if a woman is only showing her hands, face, and feet, but happens to be doing so in an elegant, classy and fashionable way, possibly accessorizing with makeup and jewelry (not too much lol), do you honestly think men are going to give her any sexual attention?!?!?! you don’t have to be ugly to be a good Muslim woman. I remember that when I was 15, I went to my school’s homecoming dance, and I did wear hijab at the time. I wore a long, strapless black dress with a long sleeved silver/black bolero jacket, black sandals, and of course a silvery gray scarf. (i went in a group of friends, not with a date of course lol). As a Muslim hijabi female, I can enjoy everything my friends enjoy while still adhering to the rules of Islam.
Salam and Yasmin, GET OVER IT.

Tim 03.20.09 at 4:23 pm

Do you all really think you all are not looked at by men , the more you cover up , I hate say this you all might be setting youre selfs up as the next women to be raped . Because Men do look at you all more so then women who don’t . So you all will be the next target . So don’t get fooled into thinking that because you wear stuff like christain women wear more modestly that it will not happend . They do stare more at all of you . Its just a matter of time that it will.

Hafsa 03.20.09 at 5:31 pm

Tim’s message is ominous but completely off base since rape isn’t about sexual attraction or lust it’s about power, control, rage, degradation and violence and a lot of deep-seated, often childhood issues. So, sexual attraction to how a woman dresses is seldom a real motivator.

As for the sisters who wrote in responses referencing what men look at and don’t look at – I don’t think we can have any idea. As I mentioned in an earlier post all sorts of things are eroticized in our culture, especially things that are exotic, hidden or unattainable.

So, I acknowledge that there are many men who will not cast an interested gaze at muslimahs just as there will be many men who will. Everyone is different – people’s sexualities and fantasy life are all different (and this variation is encouraged and focused upon here in N. America).

I don’t spend my time worrying about how others see me, as long as I am comfortable with my dress and level of modesty. I feel secure in who I am yet know that we have absolutely no control over another’s gaze or perceptions and I hope none of the bloggers here are driving themselves crazy trying to get into other people’s heads. It just can’t be done.
