I think it depends on the sisters body. if you wear mid length dresses and you have really skinny legs and you wear leggings its not as obvious but if you have big legs and wearing leggings its more clearer therefore less modest.

Hi Ladies,
I work for a fashion creative agency and I'm really interested in doing something editorial in the Muslim vein of styling. I understand that there is a wide variety of modesty in the Muslim community and I want to stick to full coverage of the hair but I also want to PLAY with shape. Not necessarily slap on skin tight clothes that covers the skin but I want to play with some aspect of sleekness and volume and proportions. That's what fashion and generally just dressing well means to me. What are your thoughts? Any advice? I really like dark modern avant garde.

assalamu alaikum sisters,
I believe that the purpose of this post is to express and share our opinions on leggings and if this trend is acceptable attire for Muslim women. This should not be a post to degrade any of our sister’s opinions, if not, a forum in which we can share ones thoughts without judging one another’s way of thinking or form of dressing. Inshallah we shall have respect for each other no matter ones beliefs and practices.

Thank you

Oh and to the girl who said she wears clothes a size larger, yuck, you should be ashamed of yourself. God has blessed you with a body that he wants you to cover with modesty but he doesn't ask you to make yourself look like a baggy mess. Again, embrace your feminine side people. It doesn't mean you have to be a slut...I wear skinny jeans with long tops ALL THE TIME and leggings with maxi skirts. NOTHING WRONG WITH IT! Everyone looks at me thinking Im fashionable and modest. When I see muslim girls wearing clothes that are so baggy I can't tell if they are male or female it annoys me so much. It makes me not want to talk to them because they look like hobos...!

Um what the hell is your problem? there is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing leggings and a long dress. Contrary to popular belief, men will NOT look at your lower legs whilst wearing a top that covers your breasts and buttocks. Seriously some so called Muslim women need o grow up big time and get with the times. SO long as you aren't wearing clothes so tight that your bum cheeks can be seen as separate entities you are FINE. I wear leggings with high-heels, long cardigans and scarves. Embrace your femininity people, it doesn't make you a slut to do it!

I am sooo happy that a Muslima finally stated that leggings are haram to wear out as part of an outfit! I get so tired of Muslim "fashionista's" creating outfits that consist of what I like to call "sprayed on pants" and then starting hijab businesses and avertising Muslimas in a distasteful way. Thank you for posting this a million times! =)
Now I don't feel weird for not wearing leggings as part of this nauseating trend ;D

Salaam 3leikum

I am not trying to be argumentative but leggings are a no to me. The only time to wear leggings is in the winter and your legs are covered. I have taken dresses and bought them a size bigger and worn loose pants are jeans underneath for full coverage kind of like the front page of this site. I think skin tight pants are leggings are not appropriate and I am 28 and have learned enough now to know what is appropriate shopping in western world. When you are wearing hijab everyone is watching you know and attributing that you are a woman of modesty and if you violate or conform to other standards your bringing reproach not only on yourself, but possibly other hijabis who are unquestionably modest. Salaam

As for those girls saying that they're still young and like following fashion... if you think you're too young then just take the hijab off. You're clearly not ready. Hijab isn't just about popping a mutli couloured sparkly scarf on your head, with about three headbands and a huge flower to make it look 'trendy'. That's not trendy. That's just weird. Hijab is dressing modestly, entirely. So for those girls who think that they can carry on wearing what everyone else does as long as their hair is covered, I'd say you're not ready yet hun, you might as well take that huge scarf off your head.
As for following fashion trends, umm leggings are so 2009. These days we have maxi skirts, chinos, tapered trousers, palazzo pants and maxi dresses; trends which are completly hot right now and which are so hijabi friendly. I for one love fashion and am always up to date with what's in and what's not. So when clothing that doesn't emphasise your body shape can be seen on all the major runways, it's a happy day for me. So stop making excuses and keep the leggings on at home or at your girls only parties coz by walking around with short dresses and leggings you're not just embarrassing yourself but you're bringing shame to the hijabis who try very hard to dress modestly.

honestly i cannot stress enough how irritated i get when i see another hijabi with leggings on. It's like what is the point you know? First I just thought it was a couple of wrongly dressed hijabis. But I work in a shopping centre in Manchester and the amount of girls i see everyday with a short dress and then leggins, is absolutely shocking. In fact recently I've even see some 'hijabis' with leggings, a short sleeved dress revealing all their arms and then a scarf so far back that you can see their entire neck and chest area. Frankly, I'm disgusted everytime I see one of them and have to restrain myself very strongly to avoid something. Instead, I just stare at them with a look of evident disapproval on my face!

I don't see anything wrong with wearing leggings underneath knee length skirts, it shows the same tightness as some jeans and pants do. I, of course would say that wearing leggings as pants period, showing off the butt and thighs, would be haraam. However, I do not think it is wrong to wear them underneath knee length skirts.

For this question, doesn't it seem that if we would ban leggings from the knee down we should ban pants? If we are to ban pants/leggings in this way doesn't this take the female sex back to before when women only wore long skirts? I consider myself a progressive moderate Muslim, is it so wrong to want to be fashionable and moderate?

It is such a shame that someone would condemn another woman for wearing such things, isn't our personal relationship with Allah our own? We should not be judging one another, it is only Allah's place to judge us.
