HIJAB FASHION DON’T : LEGGINGS
For the past few seasons, leggings have come back in a big way and they’re a popular replacement for pants for many women. Unfortunately, some Muslim women have jumped on the bandwagon as well, creating outfits that consist of short dresses, leggings, and hijab.
What’s the big deal, you ask? Well as I stated in a previous article, wearing leggings is almost the same thing as wearing stockings, which is almost the same thing as wearing nothing on your legs. Islamic modesty is not just about covering your skin, it’s about concealing your shape. So, in that regard leggings are a definite hijab fashion don’t.

It is really pretty to carry it but it is too sticky for a Muslim woman!
leggings are NOT islamic clothing at all. Muslims girls shouldn’t ever wear them.
I’ve seen a few Muslimahs wearing this trend and it’s not good. Some people just don’t get it that some trends are ok sor Islamic fashion and some are not.
Of course leggings are not for muslim women. They only cover our skin and not our shape. It is useless.
Salams,
I did not expect a “yes” answer to that question, but there were people who voted “yes” though…
Leggings and skinny jeans and all tight clothing – SAME THING ! and a NO-NO for a woman who is trying to dress in a modest way ….
There good under maxi dresses or skirts…extra warmth that is much needed with British weather :)
i’m surprised at the yes answers too! i think it’s obvious that we can’t wear them but it must need to be addressed because i see a lot of sisters wearing them.
I have to agree, i was surprised that women on here really voted yes!!! I mean come on sisters leggings dont equal modest muslimah at all. But i do see sisters wearing them, inshallah they will realize that its not just about covering our skin but our shape also.
subannaallah!! no unless theyre under a skirt or abaya
Sadly i lived in egypt and seen “hijaabis” with a scarf a tight short shirt a mini skirt with leggings under them!!
ladies hijab is not just covering your hair, your body goes with itt!!!
“O Prophet! Tell your wives, your daughters and the believing women to draw their veils over their bodies, this is better so that they will be acknowledged as respectable women and not to be insulted and Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Al Ahzab:59)
i sure would like to know who says yes and why they say yes cause this is too obvious.
i mean it depends on how you look at the question… there are muslim girls who dont wear hijab, and also technically a muslim woman CAN wear whatever she wants but there are things she should wear. at my university its popular for hijabis to wear leggings under capris or pants that cut off at the calf at the gym. why? honestly because its hot, some of us dont own sweat pants and we’re broke college students who cant afford to spend mad money on ordering sweats since we live in a place where the temp never reaches below 80
don’t tight clothes make you even hotter?
I was one of the people who voted yes, for the reason that I very often wear leggings under my abaya or under long skirts, as someone else said earlier. Normally, yes, my skirt would cover all that needs to be covered, but insha’allah the leggings make it so I can wear cooler fabrics like linen in winter — and winter weather here with windchill is often an icy -20 Fahrenheit.
Also, if the wind blows or I fall over or something, I’d rather have the leggings show than my undies! So I find leggings very useful in their way.
whoa to aisha….. i think the article is talking about leggings worn as pants not underneath clothes. i vote no for wearing them AS PANTS.
http://hegab-rehab.blogspot.com/
I was going to suggest this as your nect HIjabi Don’t. I can’t believe some Muslim women {hijabi and non-hijabi alike} would consider this as okay.
Although I would never wear leggings (as pants) out in public, they ARE a good option for sister-only parties because we all have long dresses that we wear with pants and an undershirt but I personally feel uncomfortable bearing any leg.
I voted no. But to me no as wearing them as pants. Maybe there is a way to wear this trend. Like wearing long or dresses that is way over your knees a bit before ur calf providing you wear covered shoes . Just a suggestion :) never tried it before though
Sallams Sisters,
I didn’t vote… so there.
The question seems a bit to simply written. I wear leggings under capris for working out in the gym with a long T-Shirt and sleeve-guard-style arm covers or hiking/breathable long sleeves.
I like leggings or thicker tights as well under skirts to keep warm or under skirts which are a few inches too high cut.
Peace,
erica aisha
oops, I accidentally said “yes”, but i mean “definitely not”. Of course it is haram to wear fashion clothes outside. we are not to mimic the disbelivers.
however, wecan wear it underneath an abaya or skirt as long as it doesnt show our body shape etc
If you look at the picture of the fashion models it is super clear that this article is talking about wearing leggings as PANTS. Why would anybody care if you wear them under an abaya or a long skirt? IF your dress is calf-length, would you wear the dress with pantyhose? If not, u shouldn’t wear the dress with those leggings either. Maybe some of you just misread the question?
those leggings as pants may be a hijabi don’t, but the tops the models are wearing are chic and seem hujabi friendly
I’m loving the glod/silver top. Nice..
Actually the 2nd pic from the left the model is not wearing leggings those are actually pants stuck inside boots.just so u know:) Yep the tops are hijabi friendly
F.Y.I i voted No
Salam sisters! :o)
Actually in one of the runway reviews for the Hermès catwalk show (the one where the second pic from the left comes from) they described that exact outfit as being an eastern inspired look with turban, kurta and leggings. I guess it all depends on what you consider leggings to be but either way the leggings/skinny pants are a hegabi don’t!!!!!
Assalamu alaikum diane,
I know the consideration is partly whether you can wear leggings as pants with nothing over them (seems too risque/haraam for me) but there are many many many sisters who will argue that any clothing that you can’t wear alone is haraam to wear out at all. There are women who wear very enticing/revealing clothing underneath their abayas, and they endure harassment for that. I’m asserting that I side with the idea of wearing things that might be haraam alone under proper covering.
For Aisha == Huh? Unless you wear one piece outfits, everything you wear has to be worn with something else. But if the thing is tight like leggings and tights and all, you can’t wear them at all outside. If it’s under your abaya and NOT SEEN than who cares, it’s the same thing with underwear. You could never let your underwear show in public, right? To completely spell it out==WE ARE ALL SAYING THAT YOU CAN’T WEAR LEGGINGS AS PANTS AND THAT IF YOU WEAR THEM UNDERNEATH SOMETHING SO THAT THEY ARE NOT SEEN AT ALL THEN IT’S FINE. That’s what we’re all talking about and that’s what the article is about in my opinion. Somebody tell me if I’m wrong.
You are in the right opinion sister Diane.
Nope, I wouldnt EVER wear only leggings and go out.Maybe under my skirt, or abaya, I would love to wear them.
ugh, yea i have this muslim guidance counselor that I’m very close with and we end up talking about fashion a lot (she’s not a hijabi)…and i wear very loose pants with dresses over them, almost always covering my knees, and she keeps trying to convince me to wear skinny jeans under the longer dresses cuz its just my calves, but that feels so wrong to me -.-
idk how to respond to her tho, lol
This reminds me of one of the things the Prophet (saws) said would be a sign of the day of judgement approaching – people would be clothed, but naked (aka their clothing is really really tight)
oh just to clarify, she’s my guidance counselor as in a high school advisor =)
Hijabi most definitely wear leggings out side as long as their top comes to the floor! LOOOL!
How about knee-length dresses, skirts or trench coats with knee-high leather boots? I have seen a lot of hijabis sport this look, even on Little Mosque on the Prarie’s tv show. Is it okay?
Also I think opaque leggings under a long skirt is a good idea. This is because when wearing a skirt (bare-legged), it is almost impossible not to show some of your legs when getting in and out of the car.Or the wind might blow and lift it up (embarassing I know)
good point about the leggings under a skirt, but i prefer knee highs…am i the only one? lol i cant stand tights!i think that the high boots outfit would basically be the same thing as tights, but i’d like to see what other people have to say about it.
little mosque on the prairie just ends up making fun of islam a lot, cuz they dont defend it enough…especially the woman’s right and the hijab!! they never defend it…too bad, cuz its a rly funny show…=(
Yeah you are right. Little mosque on the Prarie is meant purely for laughs, not to educate the public about Muslims, even the creater mentioned it was meant to be a sitcom, and not to be educational. Sometimes they have stuff on the show which is just straight inappropriate. Its sad though, it had a lot of potential, but I guess its better than not having any representation in media.
I really love this site. I hope you keep on making this. Actually, i am starting to wear hijab….i just started few days though….i am still on the process of experimenting…this article helped me a lot though. sis, can you make about some tips and styles about wearing hijab in HOT CLIMATE specially here in my country philippines…sometimes, i find it uncomfortable….thanks in advence…may Allah bless you…
Masha’allah I really love this site. I hope you keep on making this. Salaam Sisters,
I do not own a pair of leggings but i do know some muslimahs who wear them underneath skirts and dresses. I don’t think its a DON’T or UNISLAMIC. What is the difference between wearing a long sleeve shirt underneath a short sleeve one? VERY rarely the undershirt is loose even the ones that are sold at Hijab shops are form fitting. I believe as long as the dress or skirt is long enough by YOUR own standards its okay to wear them. YOU are the only one who will explain your actions on the day of judgement. Allah knows our intentions and if you are wearing leggings to show your shape thats haram but if you are wearing them as extra covering than more power to you!
Peace
i gotta disagree meena. if you look at the way a body is shaped, there’s nothing hiding your legs. your arms are against your sides all the time, so i think it’s a bit different than wearing something tight on your legs. if you’re really trying to get “extra coverage”, wear pants. it’s one thing if a sister just can’t find skirts that are ankle length and she wears leggings to give her a couple extra inches of coverage. but if you purposely think “i like this MINI-SKIRT, i’m gonna buy it and wear it with leggings” there’s something wrong with that. it is a don’t. ;D
Leggings are great for under a jilbab or abaya, or even a maxi dress! NEVER alone with a long shirt it shows every detail of the leg shape! But around the house i think its a hit!
I don’t think so your arms are necessarily hidden. By my standards a long skirt with leggings underneath is fine but a mini skirt is a NO NO regardless ! But thats just me, another sister may have another point of view and thats fine. Sister Badhijabday, my intentions are not to make it seem like its okay to show off your body but to explain that we can’t offend other sisters by telling them the way they dress is Haram. We should all aim to please Allah in the way we dress, speak and LIVE and if YOU feel like thats what you are doing no one elses opinion should matter.
But we are still on the subject of leggings… long flowy skirt that hits the mid calf or ankles leggings are cool… Mini skirt not so much but thats just MY opinion.
Salaam
Aslamo alikom,
I wear skinny jeans over dresses that come below the knee about mid calf. I really did not think it was a big deal since the dress i wore on top was loose and pretty long. I am suprised at many of the opinions, i’ve been wearing only abaya’s for about 2 years but ever since i had ny son it’s just been hard running after him with an abaya on. So I went back to modest western style clothing. I usually wear wide pants with long tunics but sometimes i also wear long dresses with skinny jeans. I just think wide leg pants on a dress that long looks a bit wierd. Dont get me wrong I mean wearing a mini skirt over leggings does not look modest by any standards but wearing a modest dress to your calfs with bootcut or skinny jeans is still quite modest. The argument about showing the shape of your legs and using the hadith about being women clothed but looking naked. You can give the same argument about showing the shape of the arms when you wear tight sleeves or even the shape of the shoulders many of my nikabi family members started wearing the iranina style abaya which starts from the head down for that reason……so it’s just how far you want to take it. For me personally i think the purpose of hijab is to cover me in a way that does not show my adorments…that’s my butt and breasts those are the parts i beleive attract guys so as long as those are covered insha Allah Allah will accept it as proper hijab.
Leggings can be used purposefully even thought they should not be worn as pictured above. I wear leggings underneath my skirts. So that when I walk the motion will not reveal my legs – and I will be saved from any embarrassment! :D
i think that wearing a hijab is a privalage. Why reck that privalage by wearing the wrong things. Just because you what to where something hip or “the new trend” doesent mean you can necessarilly wear them all. and thay are way to tight. And suprise suprise a 10yr old wrote this!!!!!!:):)
I agree with some of the comments here coz if you know how to wear tights and still covering your aurat then it is OK..
I’m from Singapore and the weather here is pretty sunny almost everyday except there’s some torrential rain now and then. Wearing a hijab is common here for muslims and due to the weather those non hijabi (or non muslim) tends to wear revealing clothes or those with very light almost transparent material.
My point is for those hijabi sisters who can really wear a full covered clothes and still looks stylish, i salute them 100%.
Salaam sisters i’ve never worn leggings at all even at home i just don’t find them comfortable and i don’t think they’re islamically correct to wear but thats just my opinion that’s all . Walaykumaslaam
p.s don’t start writing negative stuff about ppl on this forum just what you think
this is blog is too conservative for my taste.
I’m not a hijabi yet, but I think if you wear kneelength skirts/dresses with leggings AND knee high boots then I think that would be ok because it wouldn’t show your shape. Miniskirts and leggings are a no-no.
I must be naughty… I wear leggings/ skinny jeans with dress or skirts that are mid calf-length… IMO I think they look conservative enough… cos it looks funny to wear pants. However, you will never catch me in blouse with leggings or skinny jeans….
come on, we cannot call leggings haram…it all depends on the situation and how they are worn. WOuld I wear a shirt or a short mini dress with legging..probably never…but would I wear leggings with a few inches past my knees length dress or even mid calf dress, probably yes..it really depends on the fabric of the original item of clothing, and one;s body size…you can still make yourself look flattering and be covered. its not always HALAL and HARAAM!
personally, i don’t really touch or wear leggings…..they do make me feel a little uncomfortable…
but the thing is, i’m really young and at the moment, i don’t feel there is too much of a need to be so strict in clothing~
a muslim girl wearing a mini skirt with leggings is ridiculous….its just like ‘not’ wearing any leggings at all…..
but i’m just a school girl, and although i wear a hijab i wear a skirt at school (with leggings!!!)
wearing a mid length skirt with leggings is okayish for muslim girls, but i wouldn’t stretch it…
haha i know!!!! my always say im one of those women who can pull off just about anything w/a hijab, but this seriously isnt one. if you wear skinny jeans w/a long top thats ok, but leggings are taking it too far!! dangg!
I think wearing leggins with a dress or skirt thats about mid-alf lenght would be alright.
I would personally wear skinny or bootcut jeans rather than leggings though.
Islamically, I think wearing leggings with a miniskirt or a minidress and a hijab is pointless and borderline haram. However, if the skirt/dress is knee length or longer, I think it’s fine to wear opaque leggings or tights with it. ISLAMICALLY.
…however, I think any skirt or dress with leggings looks simply silly with a hijab, halal or not.
Just my opinion.
Salam, everyone!!!
okaii…soo i know wearing skinny jeans and leggings are a NO-NO, well in my opinion skinny jeans are not acceptable because even if you wear something around your knees, the shape of legs will show because skinny jeans cling to your legs (in my opinion), but i wanted to know whether straight jeans would be acceptable with a top thats long????….
Hi Sajia,
Straight and skinny jeans are really different. I have two pairs of straight leg pants and they actually are cut pretty wide. They are more fitted in the thigh area, but instead of flaring out, like boot cut they are just straight- from the thigh down….nice straight line…..They don’t cling to the leg, and especially with a longer tunic or shirt. I think straight are totally acceptable. Just a try ‘em before you buy ‘em. Each of our bodies are created differently and pants are too…I used to think the same about straight leg pants but when I tried them, I was pleasantly suprised.
When I was in Jordan I saw many many young girls wearing what looked like leggings under capris, or wearing jeans tight enough to look painted on. I found it very odd and asked my husband about it. He said they justify it because they arent showing skin. ??
The whole point of modesty is not to show off your goods, ya? if your shape leaves nothing to the imagination, then you may as well throw on a mini skirt and a tank top.
that is just my humble opinion.
btw- i am not muslim, but totally appreciate the site. thanks :)
i think all of you saying no to muslim girls wearing leggins should leave that desicion to the individual! religion and religious clothing is down to the individual and ther interpretation of the religious guidlines so therefore noone else should impose others with their own opinion!
I don’t think leggings are appropriate but also understand that there are different rulings as to what constitutes aurah (the area that needs to be covered). I remember being shocked to see otherwise conservative dressed hijabis in Syria wearing opaque pantyhose/tights and calf-length or just above the ankle skirts and dresses. But then in speaking with someone learned that they followed rulings that allowed for that area to be visible (albeit under opaque hose). This is not to say that the sisters wearing trendy leggings are at all aware of or following some different ruling than the rest of us – they probably just think they are cute. I simply mention the Syrian thing to say that there are different legitimate (we could debate correctness until we lose consciousness) interpretations of dress.
To clarify, for me ,I don’t see any problem with wearing leggings under an abaya, long skirt, at the gym under pants that aren’t as long as they should be – in other words as an extra layer for more coverage, warmth or as one sister mentioned so that she can wear cooler over fabrics.
What I don’t think is appropriate is wearing leggings out and about under shorts, mini or short shirts, with a tunic (in other words wearing leggings as one would fuller cut pants). That kind of body-conscious dressing is something that even many non-Muslim women would avoid.
I wear just leggings and a tank top for yoga. I do it for comfort.
Hey if sausage casing is back in…..then fine. I think sisters who wear such beautifully draped textiles are way more in fashion.
We are modest and we sport our own style! That’s the whole reason for hijab. To control how others (especially the opposite sex) think of us based on our bodies. They can’t!!!!
So, ladies. I say wear those baggy jeans with cute long jackets and skirts and keep on looking unique and expensive!! okay..corny, but true.
:)
Well no one cares about your bourgeoisie opinion. You worry about looking looking unique, expensive, and how men will see/judge you.
You need to read up on feminism and patriarchy me thinks.
Hmm, your post wasn’t really clear, Sophia. But actually I’m not that concerned about men’s gazes – it seems everything in this culture, even abayas and niqabs are eroticized anyway.
I dress with my spirituality in mind.
@Hafsa… Have you seen those pictures online too? The “sexy” niqaabi pictures? There are some strange and crazy photographers and models out there. I think that some people have eroticized niqaab and abaya because it is foreign/exotic/forbidden to them. For sick people, foreign + exotic + forbidden = good entertainment. May Allah protect us from the crazies!
Yes, I’ve not seen pics as such but read something from a non-Muslim woman who dresses in abaya and niqab pretty much all the time (in and outside of the house) for erotic purposes in her marriage. It was bizarre and disturbing.
I’m aware that all sorts of meaning can be applied to the same thing so while I think modest dress is important I don’t assume that it automatically curbs temptation and know that in this society sometimes it may actually excite some people’s curiosity.
That’s why for me, dressing modestly is a spiritual thing – part of the internal jihad.
I think that I would wear the skinny jeans I have w/ a knee length top and knee length boots (like snow boots, rain boots, fashion boots) plus only the shape of the boot shows :)
I have even heard of (Black) Hebrew Israelite women who wear niqaab and cover their hair (several ppl including Israelites told me this). What I’ve seen from them (when I studied w/ them pre Islam) was long skirts, tunics, dresses, and various headcoverings (at times). But now even niqaab! Some see it as part of their afro-asiatic culture. Look how muslims inspire. Some of the men even wear turbans and kufis..n they pray on prayer rugs n hold hands like in dua for prayer @ times….U know Allah was preparing me for Islam..lol!
salaam,
i would like to ask all the sisters a question, it is partially to do with this topic and partially not, my question is that:
my 13 year old daughter is in high school (14 this year) as it is reaching up to summer her school uniform is very uncomfortable and warm for her. i was thinking of letting her wear an knee length skirt with tights to school, but only in the summer. i am not sure if this is halal or haram?
please may you answer my question because i am not to sure on this topic.
or email me at selena.xo@live.co.uk
peace
and may allah bless you all
well im not a muslima yet, but for me tights are actually hotter than trousers. even when i used to wear shorter skirts with tights in the summer i felt quite hot. i think loose pants are much better, they just have to be made of some natural fabric like cotton or linen. i know its hard not to have to much of a choice when u have a uniform. maybe there is a possibility for u to talk to someone at her school and find out if maybe she can wear a long skirt and a uniform jacket or top. long skirts are another idea for staying cool. i dont know what country u r from, but if there r a lot of muslims there maybe u could unite an ask the school for some hijab option for ur daughters – i mean long skirt or light pants.
I totally agree with you, WELOVEHIJAB… tights are really concealing (duhh…thats why they’re called TIGHTS) and I also think that Muslim girls shouldn’t wear skinny jeans (ehm..SKINNY…what does that tell you…) Thanks for the post :)
well, im a hijabi and i dont think there’s anything wrong with leggings if u were them with a a shirt or short dress that covers at least ur “behind”. however, if ur a hijabi that is fat, then i suggest u dont wear leggings……this will prevent the public from becoming permanetly blind. man, i have seen some really fat hijabis wear leggings because they somehow think they will look cute, but the leggings made them look like giant cows wearing scarves on their heads (not appealing to look at)
WOW fuffu i totally agree with u!!! I die laughing when u see a fat girl wearing leggings or skinny jeans. HELLO, there called skinny jeans for a reason. I think they should make it illegal for fat girls to wear tight clothes.
but i think hijabis should wear shirts that cover at least their mid-thigh while wearing leggings. im pretty sure guys aren’t going to get turned on by looking at a girls ankles. I think that proper “hijabi wear” turns a guy on even more because the guys just sit there and imagin what u look like under ur abaya….lol.
lol @ Fufu. So true. I know a girl who’s kinda round, and she is always wearing leggings, skinny jeans, and obscenely short shorts, and she somehow thinks they look good on her.
@ Cindy: You’re right; a guy won’t get turned on by looking at a girl’s shins/ankles in leggings. And some guys will be turned on by abayahs, etc. because of the mysterious-ness of it all, but that usually isn’t the abayah wearer’s intention, don’t you agree?
I personally wouldn’t wear leggings with a mid thigh length dress/tunic; I’d only wear them in place of tights with something that is at least knee length. I don’t like any part of my thigh area to be clearly outlined with leggings or tights when I am in public. I’ll wear skinny jeans with a mid thigh length tunic at times (at least they’re legit pants!) but not leggings. As for miniskirts with leggings, I never really liked that look anyway. I feel like a middle schooler in that, lol.
Salam, Roqayah
well i have to disagree. first of all please don’t use the word fat and cow. it’s really not nice to talk about more plump women like that. don’t you think some of them might feel really bad while reading it? it’s not a site for “skinny muslimas”. i’m skinny myself but i have friends who are a bit more round and some of them could even be called obese. still i don’t use the word fat, cause it can be offensive. you don’t know the reason why they look like that. sure sometimes it’s their fault, but many times it’s because of some disease or hormones. they might want to look like before they got plump. it doesn’t look good but so many other things don’t look good on skinny people.
when it comes to leggings i haven’t worn them since i was 10. and that’s the only time anyone ever should to my mind. later on it can be a good covering for some not long enough dresses but to wear them with a shirt or a mini skirt??? are you kidding me? you really think men don’t look at your legs? why some of them are called leg-men??? women’s legs can be just as attractive as breasts or bottoms. men divide themselves into breast-men, bottom-men and leg-men. so yes a lot of them would be attracted to your legs, starting from your ankle up to you thigh.
if your not a muslima i don’t care but if you are, and especially if you wear a hijab, leggings and shirts or mini skirts are a definite NO NO. what kind of example do you give in that? you show everyone that you’re skinny enough to wear it, THAT’S ALL.
u don’t have to wearing leggings to be fashionable muslimah
I agree w/aagi about the fact that it’s not nice to call your sisters in God’s eyes–or anyone for that matter–fat cows. However, anyone with sense knows that if you’re bigger/rounder, you should not wear something that draws attention to your extra poundage, and leggings do exactly that.
About the leg-men thing, I agree–BUT usually, when men say they’re attracted to legs, they mean thighs. Shins/calves/ankles–not so much. I agree that hijab looks really dumb when worn with a miniskirt/minidress and leggings. It looks like you don’t know what the heck you’re doing. However, I think leggings with calf length/knee length dresses are fine, because they are not outlining/defining the “sexy” part of one’s leg.
Peace!!
I think as long as the dress/skirt comes to rest below my knees, I’m ok with wearing just boots, leggings, or tights. It’s simply like wearing skinny jeans or other pants. I am a hijabi and I think what’s most important is that people respect one another’s decisions, not just in wearing the hijab or not, but in understanding why one chooses to or not to. I’m comfortable so long as it’s past my knees.
People need to relax a bit and be respectful of other’s opinions.
Tights of course are NOT hijabi clothing at all. Just look at the name, tights. . . .but I know several hijabi’s that wear tights in a non-revealing way whatsoever and still look quite chic.
Some wear harem pants, which are like tights, but baggier (the baggier the better), they are tight around the calves and baggy around the tighs, so get a size bigger for a better, more hijabi look.
Or if you chose to wear leggings or harem pants, wear it with a long skirt, at least a bit over your knee caps, and wear tall boots (best example cowboy boots) that reach very tall. So nothing showed at all.
Or if for some bad, last resort reason, you are wearing tight leggings. Be sure to have a modestly high skirt and wear leg warmers, which fit around the calves perfectly and untight. Get a long baggy pair that matches the hijab. =D
I don’t understand why people use legging as a pants. It is not pants.
What about wearing a knee length dress, black tights and knee high boots? Is that appropriate?
Because sometimes it just looks as though the girl is dressed as a non-muslim would and then just chucked on her hijab at the last minute.
But it’s still covering the body…. =-/
What does everyone think?
i dressed like that this winter, but i don’t wear the ijab yet. when i start covering my hair, i don’t think i’ll wear it cause it just might look a bit weird. just my personal opinion.
This is a bit OT, but I don’t know where it might belong…
What are Muslimah’s sentiments about non Muslims wearing hijab?
By the way, these looks are incredible!
I’d like to add that my desire to wear something akin to hijab, though I am not a Muslim, has nothing to do with eroticism–quite the opposite, actually. I’m approaching a sober, contemplative phase, in my life. I would like to be left alone, for a while, in some semblance of spiritual peace. I don’t want my own thoughts dwelling on men, especially one in particular. If I’m a nut, please break it to me, gently. :-)
I personally think that it’s hypocrisy to say that leggins are haram but for example trench coat isn’t…Sometimes more is less and reversed, thight clothes are often much LESS attractive than clothes that give more cover to your shapes. What i’m trying to say is that some loose clothes can be much more sexier than leggins and that way drive a man’s attention towards you, and If I’m right, the hijab is originally made to cover ourselves from men, but it lose its original idea if you simply just decide that “oh well, men care about this, but dont care about that..”
Same goes for make-up,earrings and nice shoes and such…your body shapes aren’t the only thing that men think that are attracting, men aren’t so simply. So, if you have just dashing earrings or hell of a lot makeup(but with a long skirt), a man might see you much more sexier than he would if you wore leggins.
So…if one wants to ensure that no one could possibly see you attractive, you should just say insid your house and keep the lights out.
And personally I think that believing in Allah is the one true thing that matters, I find it hard to think that someone who created the universe and rules the whole world would truly care about what I WEAR. Every one should pay attention to things that really matters: how do you treat people around you and to live your live without hurting anyone and helping others.
@Abscedere
Personally, I would have no problem with it. If it helps you find the peace and contemplative state you’re looking for, I support you all the way. I can’t think of any religious reason you shouldn’t — we don’t have a monopoly on modesty or headscarves :)
The only catch I can think of is that many Muslims might assume that you are as well and it might require some explaining.
I hope whatever you choose works for you and brings you peace.
You people are amazing,
leggings is like wearing this, stockings is like wearing that which is like wearing nothing So a western woman wearing shape revealing clothes is like wearing no clothes at all?? So i may as well wear nothing? What a joke.
Talk about make an issue out of nothing,
If he was proctecting you, You wouldnt be hated by the rest of the world.
eee,
first of all: “hated by the rest of the world”? check how many muslims there are and then we can talk;)
second: i’m sorry but imagine a woman in tight leather pants, have u seen one of those? dont u think it would get some dirty looks? its not even sheer its just tight. and i guess u havent talked to many man but they do think that stockings are very sexy, so is the sheer clothing cause it “sort of” covers you but u can see EVERYTHING.
and third: the way we dress isnt “nothing” for us. this blog is about clothing and MUSLIM clothing style. if u dont like “us” or maybe even “hate” then why r u here???
It is a really cute style, and tough to stay away from. I bought some very long boots that I wear with calf-length dresses, so that my legs don’t show but it still looks pretty.
hmm this is not modest at all if u r just wearing those leggings wid a short dress or under a mini skirt. i’ve seen kids wearing this but not any grown ppl. i wud wear them under a ankle length peasent skirt bcuz those r kinda see thro. i wud wear thm under my abiyyab or a skirt just in case the wind blow too much hahaha. or i wud wear them under a long dress just in case something crazy happen and u have to u know. . .just in case! Also they can keep u warm!
No!!!
I know muslim women who wear alot of leggings without a long dress or pants over it. Its upsetting that women do this to set a trend or style………..Just makes you think whats next??
i agree taht leggings and caina cover skin, but dont cover the shape ,it doesnt go with hijab
I live in egypt, also and there is a trend of wearing very tight clothing. They figure as long as the skin is covered it’s OK. It’s so tacky. I like leggings under long skirts though, because sometimes, when the wind blows, or one steps out of a vehicle or climbs stairs, a few inches of lower leg can peek through and the leggings offer a bit of protection. But leggings ARE NOT a substitute for pants!!
Yes absolutly sisters, I truely believe that wearin a Hijab has become a fashion trend itself, This is so wrong, Some Muslim sisters out there are just getting influenced and becoming too westernised .What is the point in covering up, when wearing tight leggings is practically going to expose the shape of your legs? You might aswell not wear anything to cover your legs at all. :/
As salamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa baraktuh, baraka alahu feekum.
My sisters wearing leggings, is a big nooooo. If you work out, find something more apropiate. We have to show hayya even in front other women, if they are not Muslim more so. If they are Muslim don’t give way for sisters to feel uncomfortable with your attire, some sisters do feel uncomfortable. Hayya is the best characsteristic a Muslimah could observe.
If you believe that wearing capris, short skirts with legggins under then is acceptable, well is not. if you are hot or broke, find shalwal and kameez. They are different styles, Pakistani style and the Jordainian type wich is looser. Long skirts, a long dress is many thigs that can be done.
Please I am calling to your sense of modesty and shame.
Aquire knowledge and become the best Muslimah you can be. Not only in words but also in actions.
To Khadijah Falak bint Elliot- you are entitled to your own opinion and that is fine. On of the things that i dont necessarily agree with are the different styles of clothing one should wear. i am an american muslim. i was born here. family is from here. i think american clothing suits me fine. nunca en mi vida would i wear a mini skirt with leggings and think its acceptable but i have dresses that come down to my knees that i wear skinny jeans or leggings with it. its all about your intentions as stated before by many others. Allah will judge you and you alone so as long as you arent trying to acquire any negative attention i dont think that there is a problem.
this is a general note for everyone including me…Allah tells us in the Quran that we should speak eloquently and with wisdom. Since Allah is ALWAYS in your presence speak as if he is. you would not say harsh things while he is in your presence for fear of disappointing him
p.s.i play sports. and most sports require shorts to be worn in lieu of pants . if i were to place leggings under the shorts and have socks over the leggings would i be in the wrong? should i find something else to wear? mind you my intentions are not to attract the opposite sex but they are to be modest and play the games that i enjoy
When you dress yourself in the morning, reflect on why you are wearing the Hijab. I will not vote if leggings are to be worn or not, because honestly, though my true gut feelings tell me it’s shouldn’t, I am not one to make it a standard rule to all. You must use your own judgment and only Allah Almighty will know if your choice was pure at heart.
And as a side note, while you are reflecting, think about societal influence around you. Are you striving to adhere to the latest fashions of the world On how Americans, or locals of whatever country you reside in, may view you or are you dressing for Allah. Think about this ladies. I wish you all internal peace and pure happiness.
I guess this discussion has died down. I wanted to pose a question. First let me say that I agree with the more liberal interpretation that it would be considered modest by western standards to wear dresses without leggings, if the dress seems modest enough. Now, as Muslim women, we feel the added necessity to wear tights/leggings & boots to cover as much as possible, while still wearing a dress and letting the dress be the main fashion statement. My QUESTION is, while we are adhering to a standard of modesty which some of us feel is appropriate and in line with the spirit of the hijab, would it be okay to PRAY in this type of outfit, or would one have to have a spare pair of pants on them in order to meet the standards that are required for our prayers to be accepted?
what if wearing above knee length dress. maybe a few cm above knee.wear a legging and knee-length boots? i dont think it will expose much. :/
i think it’s okay if u were legings with long boots and wear leg warmers i think tht would cover up everthing and i also think if u wear a long dress its okay
everyone here are against the fact that not to wear leggings but many girls who made their comments above din’t remember that wearing churidaars are equally same like wearing leggings so plz think about this..
I need some advice, sisters. I’ve gained a little weight . since my last baby. While I am working on losing the weight, I need some advice. I don’t won’t my clothes to look too tight in the wrong areas, so I was wondering if any of you sisters have worn any body shapers or undergarments to help minimize feminine problem areas. It is just frustrating because I don’t won’t my clothes to be tight and to reveal my curves but I don’t to look like I am being swallowed by my clothes by wearing too large of clothes. I want to try a kymora body shaper but they got real bad reviews over the internet so I was wondering if any of you sisters have any advice or suggestions ? I just started wearing more abayas too, and what is the best thing to wear under an abaya? When I wear full clothes underneath, they feel so bulky. I am considering on getting some leggings to go underneath. No one will see, but I do feel I need extra coverage, just in casse.
