HIJAB APPROVED : VICTORIA’S SECRET

This edition of Hijab Approved features 3 lovely maxi dresses from Victoria’s Secret. Now, I know that VS isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you’re thinking of modest clothing, but, there are a number of things to love about these dresses… They’re super long (41″ from the waistline), fashion-forward (all three fall in line with a major fashion trend for Spring 2008), and loose enough to be worn with a variety of toppers (jackets and cardigans).

Dress #1: Crochet-trim Maxi Dress

This dress falls in line with the Safari trend because of its khaki color. In keeping with that trend, you could wear this one with a Safari style jacket and an animal print hijab.

Dress #2: Halter Maxi Dress

This dress has a very bright and busy print that is reminiscent of the Tribal trend. To break up such a busy print, you’ll want to wear this dress with solid colors that are found within the print itself. One option would be to wear it with a white jacket or cardigan and a yellow hijab.

Dress #3: Long Halter Dress

This dress is very Boho-Chic. An easy way to style this one would be to pair it with a brown cardigan and a soft pink hijab to tie it all together.

Which dress is your favorite?

I usually wear these long maxi dresses with a long sleeve inside as well. Not only when I go casual, but also when I work. It’s so flexible that you can also wear it to functions as well. I love the fresh, vibrant colors…

Beautiful mashallah!! Some really great tips :) btw this is to all sisters, in summer if you wear wedges what do you use to cover your feet pop socks (like shin length tights) … as when ive tried to wear them with open shoes they look funny so I just stay with closed shoes :/

yes, the dresses may be nice, but I don’t think it is okay, to support someone like VS who sells women bodies so cheap!
I think modest clothes become worthless, if you aren’t modest inside or support haram things like this!
sisters think about it! VS is exactly everything we disapprove!

Reply

tracey

I don’t think that VS represents everything that we disapprove of. What company in America or anywhere for that matter can you say is doing EVERYTHING that Allah wants? What company has every employee that is doing EVERYTHING that Allah wants? And so on and so forth. It would be impossible to be that picky and frankly, we’d all have absolutely nothing to wear because even if you buy your own fabric to make your clothes, the fabric company probably does business with companies who are doing haram things. Unfortunately, we live in a society that tells people that showing off your body is the key to happiness and success. We can’t get away from those concepts. So what can we do? We can take the good from people/companies (like those maxi dresses) and leave the rest behind. Allah makes this religion easy for us, let’s not make it harder on ourselves!

AMEN @ TRACEY!

Mashallah, what a great point~! Riya

meryem

as you think …
I can’t stand up for this particular company, because I really disapprove its concept. but it is your own choice …

Reply

Riya

I think if a company sells modest clothing then why not buy it? Doesn’t matter what else the company does because nobody can control that you know?

I thought lingerie and sleep wear were VS’s main thing (atleast as it started like that). Don’t you wear lingerie and sleep wear? Usually these things are worn at home in your privacy– where is the bad in that? All stores have to market what they sell and that’s what they do– good Muslim men don’t look and don’t want to look but as women, we can look and buy :) that’s my opinion.

Kima–love your website, mashallah great job.

Everyone–we should all recognize that all of us (that read this website) are of different backgrounds and we should definitely respect any differences that appear through our comments and keep our postitive connections through our obvious similarities.

I love the first one. And I think I am the only person here who like it! hehe! It’s ok. I don’t like too much the second one. In my opinion it catches more the attention of people than the rest of dresses. The last one is also very nice.Kima good work!!

Just reading through some comments…

Although VS can be ‘haram’ in a sense, a Muslim wife can still wear these things for her husband. It isn’t completely taboo, it goes for anything else in the fashion industry too.

It’s just when we go out in public that we have to dress in the modest code :) This was a mistake I made when I reverted to Islam. I threw most of my things out thinking “I can’t wear that!” but obviously I could – for my husband!!

Salaams,

My sister actually just bought a maxi dress from VS. It was on sale for $40 and beautiful mashAllah! I tried it on (we both have different body types) and it fit the both of us great! I recommend this to all sisters because they are not tight and long as well as beautiful!

I see that many of you got me wrong, or not the point of what i’m saying …
it is not about underwear, and it is not about what you wear at your place.
it is about the commercials and the image of this company! you know that there are probably more men than women ordering the catelogue and watching the commercials! it became like some kind of playboy … so men could fantasies about this women …
so do you really think that is okay? i don’t know … if think hijab meens more than just being a fashion item. it is a symbol of what you wear in your heart, and what is on your mind.
maybe you should do without some dresses, even they’re pretty, and give that money as zakat, than buying VS clothes.
very sad, not one of you thought that there was something to worry, or critizise … just so you could buy a new dress

meryem: where do you shop? Do you buy under wear? If you do then aren’t you supporting companies that show women in under wear in there catalouges? Well then it is the same thing as VS, they are just on a larger scale. Its a shame that most places our here use sex to sell their products but, as muslims we have to try our best to find ways to use what is out there to dress the right way and i really don’t think that it matters that vs has crazy commercials or magazines. As long as we are not wearing that stuff outside then i dont see anything wrong with it. But inshallah Allah will bless us all with understanding of what is right and wrong and we will follow that to the best of our ability. But i think that it is wrong to act like sisters are wrong for appreciating a dress that covers well and that is cute, just because it came from victoria secret and just because we dont agree with their advertising. But that is just my 2 cents. I pray i didnt offend. luv you guys lots. salams

Asalaam walaikum ladies!!
Maryem: I don’t understand what you have against vs. If YOU are not the half naked model why is the clothing a problem? You can’t control what type of advertising they have. And they don’t sell bodies, they sell underwear AND modest outerwear. What major company do you know that models undewear fully clothed? Im not saying that its right, but I don’t think you should boycott them for that. What about Islamic websites that have women that are modeling the jilbabs with no scarf on? Do you boycott those sites also? Do you eat at fast food or regular restaurants ever? Do you boycott them because a few of their products have pork or are made with pork? No, you just don’t eat those products. What is the difference? I could see if the ladies were overlooking a major jijab no no like tightness, or it being revealing, but it just comes from a well-known lingerie company. Im sorry, if I’m missing the point, please correct me and explain.

Oh Sisters! Have you all noticed that on every single one of these posts some one says one negitive thing and someone else has to bite back!?! Maryem i understand what you are saying. It is a very negitive image of women that VS portrays , we can’t deny that fact? If you choose not to support that type of company i understand completely! The point is Victoria’s Secret is a worldwide company that uses sex and negitivity to sell they’re products we all know that! I believe we should support muslim owned businesses and support those who have positivity in mind and yeah Its hard to find. Again its not necessarily unislamic to buy clothes from this company but in the future lets be concious of who we purchase from and ask ourselves Is this the type of company I want to support?

I’ve read all the comments, I dont’ agree with VS, since out money goes straight to fund the killing off palestinians, but I must admit I do have vs products, ppl have given me gifts from there. I do have their magazines shipped to my home, && my habibi does “act” like he’s lookint at it. But since my habibi is very islamic, he knows not to, && knows how I feel about vs in general. I am a muslim && I’m venturing on my own islamic shopp soon, Inshallah. I would just like to know if any women would really be interested in my online store if I had lingerie, sleepwear, bathwear on hte sight??

Dressing modestly is a very hard ordeal, if you don’t have the taste to present your fahionistic side, many girls just don’t care what they look like, as long as they are pbeying Allah. I fear Allah, but I love fashion, so let every co. run it’s own operation, && make sure that if you don’t want to be appart of their franchise, to pass on by them, && just say estak7ferAllah. Since I’ve always had such haste for loads off products, or certain ppl, I would have to bit my tounge that way I wouldn’t giev anyone my two cents, now I realize.. just let them be, I say estak7ferAllah && go about my wat.

Jazak Allah Khair.
Thank you for the email updates :]

Meryem, stop being so pathetic. a long dress is a long dress. I don’t know how old you are, but I’m 15 and starting hijab this summer, inshallah. I’m already practicing covering up more than I used to, and I know what’s modest and what’s not. These dresses, for example, are. They cover what they should (if you wear a jacket or w/e with them, obviously) and don’t even have so much as the VS logo on them in any way. So basically, they are just like any other beautiful summer maxidresses. If you don’t like what’s on this blog, don’t go on it. End of story!

asalamu alaikum
Im sorry sisters
but Meryem is right
Why make her feel like its so wrong to not want to support a company that uses uncovered women to advertise their product!!!
WE ARE MUSLIMS!!!
Not Kafiruun so if she feels that its wrong then
ALHAMDULILAH
Remember the day when You will be asked about every penny you ever spent?
Or have you all 4gotten why we r on this dunya?
Tabarakallah Sister meryem speaking the truth and not supporting something that is HARAM!!!
If you buy their products then it just helps them to be successful!
SISTERS
DONT BE FOOLED BUT THESE ENEMIES OF ALLAH AND TAKE RESPONSIBILTY 4 EVERY ACTION BECAUSE YOU WILL BE QUESTIONED ABOUT IT
AND ALLAH KNOWS BEST

Reply

Rabeeyah

Laila, I disagree with you! Yes we will be asked how did we earn our money and how did we spend it…and inchAllah we will reply we spent it buying modest clothes to cover ourselves! I mean let’s take Walmart for example…anyone who lived in the US has shopped at Walmart! Yet do you know that Walmart is known to be the worst employer ever???
Will you stop buying gas at Shell or Exxon because they do haram things with their money? It is not up to us to determine what so and so does with their earnings, as long as it isnt outwardly publicized.
Don’t make Islam more difficlut than it is…the VS models will be judged in the Akhirah for their nakedness, all we can do is buy clothes that are made available to us…will you stop giving saddaqa because more likely someone who receives it will go buy cigarettes or something haram with it? (We can’t live our life on assumptions)…I honestly don’t see VS as anything more than a clothing store and if they sell something nice and affordable, then why not buy it!
Again forgive me if I have offended you.
Wa salam!

I definitely agree with Rabeeyah! I do try to avoid walking around too much in places where the ads are all of uncovered women and try mostly to stare at the floor while shopping (and keep my male family members waiting outside), though, but there’s a hadith which explains just this, about a man who gave sadaqa, and then found out he had given to a thief. He gave again, this time to an adulteress. He gave again, to a rich person. He was worried, but his sadaqa was accepted, because the money he gave might stop the thief stealing, the adultress sinning, and make the rich man give charity! If Allah (SWT) accepts THAT, do you really think that you’re going to get sins for buying these clothes?

Otherwise, I have to say I like Maxi dresses, but the tops, for hijabis, must always be coupled with a cardigan or something, and I dislike that look, so I would cut off the top and wear it as a skirt! Tall people look AMAZING mashallah in really long flowy skirts like these!
